What do you all know about selling a vehicle to an auto recycler/salvage?

Well my truck finally bit the dust last night. As I was driving down a hill my drive shaft sheered off and detached from the rear of my truck. I thought I was going to flip off the road as it was weird to free fall without any engine engagement. Anyways, to make a long story short, the repair costs are like 3K-4K and I already put that much into my truck two years ago. I am done repairing it as it has 153,000 miles. Problem is, it is unable to be driven. I want to sell it to be salvaged/recycled. They could sell the parts from my truck for thousands. How do I go about selling it for a fair price to an auto recycler? We have a huge auto recycling company about 10 miles from where my truck is located. I am not looking for much, but at least a little something to help me put down some money on a new/used truck. Thanks for any advice guys. This sucks.

There are a lot of places you can donate your used non-running cars/trucks to like goodwill and take a decent tax break on.
Salvage your lucky to get 150-200 cash in hand with no tax break. or try craiglist for a parts truck.

I take them in to scrap yards and they pay by weight. Last one I took in I got .09¢ a pound for it. All I ever need is the title and that's only if the vehicle has an engine in it.

My engine is still strong. We have a huge market for scrap parts in my area. Many people are working on their own cars here with this economy so the demand has increased. Hell they could sell my tires for hundreds in this area.

P.S. Be realistic. Your worn out truck that can't be driven is NOT worth thousands unless you have new designer tires, wheels etc etc. It's a piece of junk that no one wants. Thousands????? I don't think so.

David, the PARTS could be scrapped for thousands. I am realistically hoping to get a few hundred bucks for my truck.

How do I know they could sell the parts from my truck for 2-3 thousand? I've spent some time at auto recycling/salvage yards. This is from my original post you bozo.

Have you thought about an "as-is" ad on craigslist --- full disclosure?

    Somebody wants it, I'm sure.

You can always come down on price. Hard to go up.

I'm not sure what scrap prices are like in your area, but in mine they are higher than they have ever been. My brother was offered 275 bucks for his 94 grand am from a salvage yard.

If you do decide to go that route, figure out what it weighs, then call around and see what they are paying out per ton. Last year I scrapped an astrovan and got 350 bucks for it.

Personally I'd put in on craigslist, chances are you're going to get better money for it, but don't take anything less than what a salvage yard will give you.

If the parts sell, why not part it out? If the tires are worth hundreds, put em on craigslist. Sell any sellable part out of it, then take the rest for scrap.

If it were me, I'd try the craigslist thing for the whole thing for a week and then pull all the parts I could off of it, including the tires and then take it to the scrap yard. Then put the parts and tires on craigslist. I can't see you ending up with less than 8 or 9 hundred this way.

    Truck as scrap = 150
    tires and rims = 250
battery, starter, and all the easy parts to get to = balance

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I would have to get it towed to my in-laws house as parting it out at my house would be terrible due to where I live. I am now on the hunt for a new/used truck like a Tacoma, Ridgeline, or whatever.

Go the craigslist route. I salvaged a car a few years ago when the tranny went out. It was just an old commuter car for work. Had a brand new set of $350 tires on it when the picked it up. They only gave me $200 for it. I really didn't care. I just wanted to get it out of my driveway.

Try the craigs list thing like has been suggested. If that don't work part It out by selling the tires and maybe even the motor. After that bring It to the salvage yard and they'll pay you what scrap price Is going for. Scrap Is supposed to be going up here this spring too. Maybe It would be a good Idea to hang on to It till then.

Don't get a Ridgeline... dude, man card revoked for the thought of it. lol. J/K

On a side note, I'm not sure what you can get out of it $500? I know a place down in Winston-Salem paid a guy $1100 for 2 scrapers, it wasn't a scrap place it was a junk yard. They turn around put it on there lot and it's one of those you pull your own parts places... You have anything like that around you?
