After finishing my senior year of school at a tech high school i majored in graphic communications focusing on printing. i was accepted into central maine community college studying printing hoping to get a degree. 2 weeks prior to me packing up there to go to college i found out i had been lied to about the printing industry and it is failing and being phased out to high speed copy machines. the college i was accepted to did not require SATS so i never took them. So my question for you is, What did you do after high school for work or school and what would you do if you were in my shoes.

I went straight to work for the Postal Service.... hoping to earn career status when it becomes my turn in line... right now, it can be tough, but it keeps the bills paid... 4 1/2 years and counting.

I went to an engineering / co-op school in Michigan. I was only there 2 years and moved back home, went to college locally and got a full time job, still doing engineering. Today, well, you guessed it, I'm in engineering... went from Ford diesel engines to Toyota forklifts...

Went to D1 college to play lacrosse (and school ). Got up in the middle of class one day, packed my stuff, and headed to Florida to start my quest to make the PGA tour. Didnt' think finishing college was for me. My mind was elsewhere. Bunch of mini tours and qualifying school later, didn't quite make it. It's all good though, I have a good gig now.

I went to tech. school for Tool & Die. One of the stupidest decisions I have ever made. About 10 years later I relied on my wife to support my *** when I went to college for civil engineering. Now that was a good decision.

I went in and still am, a Rural Carrier Associate... Basically I'm the main carrier's substitute... but I know several routes and also deliver express mail, No I don't get 40 hrs a week, but I make 20/hr... and It averages out to a regular low paying full time job, with plenty of time to hunt. I also work part time at a restaurant close to my house for a little extra income, plus any odd job I can get in on. I started out around 14th in Line... I think I'm setting at number 6 right now.

Research what job industries are expected to gain steam in the next 5-10 years. Find a job within one of those industries that you think you will enjoy. And finally, find a school/trade school/apprenticeship/etc that will teach you the in's and out's of that job and will also give you an opportunity to network with people in that industry. The world is becomming more specialized and the jobs are becomming more specialized as a result. Too many people (like me) just go/went to college and get a "general" degree instead of really focusing in on a niche that will keep you employed when things go south in the job market. Now, if that "general" degree is from Harvard or Yale, or somewhere like that, then all is ok. If it is not, then one must specialize in my humble opinion.

Agreed. That is the key. Of course finding that niche that you will enjoy for your whole life in the hard part.

Followed a chick to a college, drank like a fish. After racking up crazy debt and donating a ring to the cause, I came home and drove a lumber truck and continued to drink most of my money away.

4 yr degree for Technology Education. We were in high demand at the time (only two schools offered it in the state). I got a great job, but I'm lucky now. Wouldn't ever recommend the education field to anyone in today's times.

Believe it or not, I went to a music school. I wanted to be a music teacher. Did that for 2 and a half years, took a semester break to earn some money to keep it going and got drafted within a month. My family didn't have the money to spend on college at all. Spent 8 years in Uncle Sams Army in exotic places like Vietnam for 2 years, Hawaii for 14 months. Due for another tour but as a newly wed with a new baby, I said I'm done and got out. Played the rest of my life workiing for myself cleaning peoples dirty drawers and undies. LOL

Went to Western Kentucky University for 2 years, earned my way into the Pharmacy School at Samford University in Alabama....currently working my way through that.

In a few years, unless I have other commitments (Read: an oops kid) I will be moving to Alaska to work for the IHS out of Anchorage. Pay kills anything the midwest has to offer, and I'd love to live up there for 3-5 years while still young.

I am in my last year of my business management degree. I work full time for musco sports lighting. Right now I am working on getting an internship with muddy outdoors where I would get sales experience. It could lead to a job sith them come September or it will help me move up in my current place of work. Will be working 80 hours a week but the experience will be priceless. Oh and ill get discounted stands and arrows lol. I plan on eventually starting my own company but that may never happen unless the economy turns around.

I went to a state college an hour away from home and just finished my bachelors degree in Business Management. I'm planning on heading to Alaska in spring and spending at minimum a summer up there Salmon fishing. Eventually I plan on finding a job that I can use my major for, but I'm in no hurry.

If I were you I would go take my SAT just incase you do decide to go to college.

I went to college for wildlife management. Got my Associate degree at a 2 year college. Was working summers at a national wildlife refuge. Was a sweet job. Good boss. I love being outside and he warned me... if I continued... it would be an office job like his and that was if I was lucky to get hired after a Bachelor degree. Too many people trying to get the same job. I went to the city to continue on with the bachelor degree and hated city life. The thought of sitting behind a desk for the rest of my life just didn't appeal to me after a while. I didn't want to get on the enforcement side and become a warden so I quit college after much drinking and women chasing.

I went back home and got a worthless job that payed the bills. Meet my wife to be and started dating her. Got another job working for a farmer. Didn't mind that since I was a country kid anyways. Found a better job working for another farmer and have been here ever since. 24 years in March. I get to be outside watching wildlife everyday while also planting corn, soysbeans and edible beans and watching it grow. Long hours but I can't really think of another job I would rather be doing.

Winters have us hauling grain or working in a nice warm shop. The boss likes buying used equipment cheap other then the main tractors, tillage equipment, combines. We pull it in the shop and fix it up. We use it for years and he turns around and sells it for a lot more then what he payed for it even with the expense of fixing it up. Examples...

610 bobcat he payed $900 with another $500 stuck in it for a total of $1400 including a paint job we did. We used it for 6 - 7 years and he turned around and sold it for $4600.

Military 90 hough payloader he payed $5500. We had another $2000 in it including the paint job we did for a total of $7500. Used that for 4- 5 years and he sold it for $18,000.

Another hough payloader that he had $8000. Used it for a couple years and sold it for $25,000.

Another hough payloader that he had $23,000 invested in. Ran it 2 years and sold it for $35,000.

Unreal the things he can find for " winter projects " for us and he comes out smelling like a rose in the end when he dumps it.

We've built a dual Header trailer from scratch for the combines, a 40" boat dock, a 50' boat dock, 100 bushel seed treater, redid/overhauled two lowboy trailers, and even built a 2 wheel horse chariot for the fun of it. The guy he buys his welder and plasma cutter from loves him. We replaced both more often then most welding shops. We pretty much have the best. We wish he would get us a shear and a bender for metal then we would be able to do it all.

The last two weeks has found us polishing his Cessna 140 plane, over hauling the engine on an international A tractor/fixer upper project, pulling the swing motor out of a 160LC JD track hoe to be resealed and checked over, polishing up a 90 F250 pickup he wants to sell, installing a Blue Tooth, AM/FM radio in one of the 5 Kenworth trucks he has, 2 oil changes, a bunch of welding and cutting while we play with the new welder and plasma cutter and using his corn to inventory the bucks roaming his yard at night. Got me a nice 5 pt shed out of his yard so far and two more sheds at the main farm this week. :)

He is the only farmer I know who has his own 130' boomed Crane. LOL Nothing surprises me anymore on what he may have us do !!! The place is an adventure. Freaking love it !!

    Tim
