I was telling a buddy about my buck and it got me thinking about what I actually hit with the shot. I had assumed that I took out the left lung and clipped the right, but now I'm wondering if I got one lung and a vein/artery (jugular, carotid, etc.). The shot was 12 yards, out of a 15 foot stand, and he was quartering away. I did pull the shot left, causing my arrow to exit his neck instead of hitting the opposite shoulder. He dumped buckets of blood for about 90 yards before finally crashing. Blood at impact, after 30 yards, and entrance/exit wounds (tuft of hair 6" up from sternum). What do you guys think? Does anybody have the shot simulator?
Hard to tell exactly without being the one opening him up. It does look like you got at least the close side lung and whether or not you hit the jugular vein is hard to tell from the photo. Bottom line......... you shot a VERY nice deer.
Thanks! It was pretty warm that day (multiplied by the adrenaline from shooting my biggest buck) so the gutting process was very rushed. I really don't remember even doing it...
That is a nice buck. No doubt he did his share of bleeding! You had to have gotten one of those arteries/veins along with that lung (mouth blood).
I also cant say what you hit without seeing the internals but your shot placement tells me you got at least one lung even if the blood isn't the super bubbly lung blood we're used to seeing. Look at the pool of blood where he died whatever you hit he definitely was pumping it out! Congrats on a dandy buck!!!
That's a lot of blood, more than I've ever seen for sure. Im gonna guess you hit every major artery and vein coming out of the top of the heart that you can with a single arrow. Oh and at least one lung. Congrats!
Im guessing you hit at least one lung and also nailed the juglar on the way out. My dad hit a buck in the juglar one time with a 30-06 ,needless to say the thing bled like stuck hog.And I have seen my share of hogs get stuck.
How long between the shot and recovery? With the exit wound low on the neck, I would expect more blood at the exit wound had you hit a major neck artery than I see in these pictures.
I honestly thought I had cut that left leg off with the way he plowed off through the brush. I got everything ready at the truck and went back in after him. Looking at time stamps, it was 53 mins from shot to recovery.
I also say lung and top heart veins/arteries. I've seen you tube videos of people shooting animals when the entry wound is where your exit is- the blood comes pouring out like a garden hose.
