so i sat in my stand for about 45 mins tonght a momma doe and its couple month old baby came in behind me and then a massive doe came in on the left it turned i grabbed my bow and stood up it played a game with me for about 6 minutes it was just out of my comort zone about 30 yrds away. then it stomped and snorted at me for a good 2 mins then ran up the hill.. WHAT happened???? I use scent blocker spray and i was in an olive green coveralls (my camo coveralls are to thick for this weather).
Did you remember to tip-toe to your stand on one leg while silently whistling dixie to the tune of Old Macdonald? If you did, then you were probably just busted by an already tentative deer. Highly common, highly irritating. Good luck next time around
scent blocker spray doesn't promise 100% odor elimination. A deer can smell a lot better than we do, and it sounds like she was already alert to your presence, caught one good whiff, and hauled ass
Was she downwind of you? Scent blocker and cover scents can only go so far. It's impossible to rid yourself of all odor. She may have still got wind of you. Also, where did you walk in at? Was she along the same path that you walked in on? She may have picked up on your scent that way. She could have spotted you or heard you. You have to make sure you move as slowly as possible and keep the movement to a minimum. I usually just hold my bow in my lap so that I don't use that extra movement to grab it off of a hook or something. Either way - she noticed that something wasn't right and busted you. Happens to the best.
you probably gave the best advice she did go right down wind. i know for a fact she didnt see me move . and she wasnt on the trail i walked in on . her instinct just got the best .. but thanks
It's been my experience that most of the time when guys say this, it's because they have doubts whether they were busted moving or not. Doe could have winded you, or the doe could have seen you move. Your call is way more accurate than ours on which happened.
No matter what you do to cover up your scent, it will never be enough to fool a deer. Wether its an old timer or a yearling they will almost always smell you when they are downwind. What they do after they smell you is what seperates the big boys from rest. Not much you can do besides reposition your stand so your scent trail isn't heading right into them.
Either caught wind of ya, or she caught you reachin for your bow out of the corner of her eye, and just wasn't quite sure what was up.
