I use a blend from a independent mill. 12% protein feed them something other than junk food if you are going to feed them

We are adding 7 bossbuck feeders into the operation here, I just ordered them this week and should have them sometime next week. I'm planning on feeding a ground mix of 1/2 soybeans, 1/4 corn, 1/4 milo. I'm thinking it should give me a protein total of about 15-18% with a good diversity of flavor and energy. Between food plots and mineral stations, I think it'll provide a good supplemental feed.

I'm also considering using some pellet feed but have not decided on any one brand or product. It will have to be something that divulges what the protein source is and won't be anything like bone meal. I have emails out to a couple different companies on their product lines but no returns yet. One is Record Rack and the other is Purina mills. Right now I'm leaning towards Purina Mills.

Never heard of anyone grinding up soybeans in a feeder. I bet the deer like it. Have you tried it in the past?

Yes, I have a grinder/mixer that I bought for the deer feeders last year and with expectations of adding more feeders this year. Mostly be running them through winter and early spring to get the bucks recovery time as short as possible from getting run down through the rut and also to improve birthing rates and weights.

Hell if you put out that much feed, and food plots it kinda defeats the purpose of hunting lol, Might as well high fence a 1acre piece of land and shoot fish in a bowl.

I'm not bashing you to hard, but feeding, baiting, isn't really hunting in my opinion. Imagine if you were out in the woods and all you had was a bow and arrow, what would you do, if you couldn't funnel the deer by you're tree stand on a daily basis ;(?

sorry not meant to offend, but i guess everyone has their own flavor.

Be careful about being too quick to judge friend, you have no idea what the operation is here or how it's ran and operated. If you did, you would see just how ignorant that comment was.

It isn't a high fence operation and never will be, it's a free range QDM managed series of farms that covers about 2800 non-contiguous acres and as I stated the feeders will be used mostly after season through winter and early spring.

I've hunted free range deer since I was a kid without feed, cameras or anything else. Everyone has their idea what "hunting" is I guess. I've evolved and am now geared towards the management aspect of deer, if that twerks your britches then you're welcome to your opinions but my advice would be to temper your judgmental ignorance and learn what you're talking about before wrongly looking like an idiot D bag on a forum.

Not offended Jtrump, deer feed in the winter is needed where I live, sure the deer would get by but like covey said people manage deer in some places supplemental feeding really can make a difference in herd health

Like Sota said, I will put some feed out in winter. Anything that can give the deer a little better shot at making it through the winter in better health is good for me. I don't feed year round, and I don't have any foodplots yet. But I did plant some fruit trees and hope to get a little food plot or two set up for next year. Am I a fan of hunting over a giant pile of bait? No. I think a food plot is entirely different and takes a lot of work, and generally has different goals.

    I ordered the 350# versions.

I'd like to add that as far as food plots, feeding, baiting, management goes....I understand where the opinion would come from that a person that uses those things could be considered a low class spoiled hunter...I get it and share the same opinion in the right circumstances. Ours are not those circumstances, all the management that is done here by me is done as quality deer and herd health centric. All hunting is done bait free, attractant free and totally free ranging deer. Obviously we are going to take advantage of the byproduct which is healthier and better deer.

I find it entertaining when other hunters come off with an attitude against management and then find out they are actively trying to get permission to hunt or are hunting as close by to a property that is intensively managed as they can get...and that happens a lot. Not to say that's the case with the post earlier but I run into that scenario all the time. We have a few guys around here that like to talk smack about over management of deer but then drive the roads around the properties trying to catch a monster out in the fields so they can brag about shooting a monster buck with a rifle. Or they ask around all the neighbors properties trying to hunt the fence lines.

I see way too many times on here hunters bashing other hunters. If someone wants to hunt over bait or food plots then who are you to decide if its wrong or not. Are you going out in the woods and picking up sticks for arrows and hand making your own bow?

I agree with the phrase whatever floats your boat do what makes you happy and what you think will get you ol mossy horns I hunt over a rye grass food plot and some corn about 100 yards out just enough to make the deer stop too but in reality at my lease once the rut kicks in you need to be in the deep woods were the deer are running around

This is such an asinine statement. Just because you say "not to offend" then actually say he isn't hunting because he hunts different than you is offensive. Not everyone is going to hunt exactly the same way. If you don't want to grow a food plot or bait where legal...DON'T!!! To say that some one isn't hunting because they are doing something you don't agree with is just plain stupid!

Not to mention I was killing deer with archery tackle way before I was old enough to drive a car (legally) back in the 80s in portions of MO and KS where it was a hell of an accomplishment for a grown man to bag a deer of any kind let alone a P&Y buck. So when asked "What I would do out in the woods with a bow and arrow where I didn't have stuff to funnel deer past my stand every day", I'd say given the same equipment, same area and set head to head in a survival situation...you'd better hope one of two things, either there's plenty of game for both of us or you're damn good at begging for a handout.

But, I think this thread has been run off course quite a bit....I believe it was originally about what feed is best?

Pretty comical needless to say, one you didn't mention when you would be feeding them, and right now 3/4 of you have food out baiting deer this early so that on opening day you can go sit at a food plot or one of 18 feeders, or hell hand feed them next to you're stand, then take a shot and call it hunting. Come hunt Florida on public land and let me know how that works out for you ;)

Call it hunting if you want to and if you feel accomplished in you're monster free ranged QAMA no high fenced fed deer, and have no problems looking at him on the wall in amazement then by all means continue to do so. This is my last post here so, feel free to go back to talking about these outstanding feeder's, options etc.
