Been thinking of buying one, had one as a kid and had fun with it.

I know next to nothing about them.

Would be used for general messing around in Ohio... Relics, coins etc...

Well, the general idea is you walk around holding it a few inches off the ground and it'll beep at you, alerting that there's something metal below it.

    ;) :D

It's helpful to have a small shovel too!

Whites makes good products. Garretts make some good ones too. Mine Labs are the top of the line but you are paying a lot more for one.

I've had 2 Whites detectors. My first was a DFX and my one now is the V3 Spectra. There are a bunch of them out there, but as with any of them - you get what you pay for. You can't go wrong with any of the bigname brands, they are all good. Whites, Minelab, Garrett, Fisher. A great place to do business with is Kellyco. Real great people to deal with.
It's definately a cool and addicting hobbie. I' found some pretty cool stuff with mine. My oldest coin was a 1797 Large Cent. I also found a United States Mail lock from 1812.
    Here's a few pics.

Only got three rabbits a 4 squirrels , but a boat load of mice. The problem this year was we didn't have any snow cover. Everytime we'd go out she would end up getting mice - after a couple of them in her belly she would be fat and happy and just watch rabbits run by. When there's snow cover , you don't see the mice - hence the better rabbit and squirrel hunting. Will be trapping a new one for this year come September. Hopefully we'll have some snow this winter.
