Penetration is all about momentum. Take a look at this article. After reading I made the decision to step up to the Easton FMJs. So far I can tell you they hit the target like a Mack truck. From the reviews I've read this will translate right over to the field and penetration on wild game. Momentum Beats Speed for Lethal Arrow Hits | Quality Deer Management Association
Carbon Express Pile Drivers are weight forward arrows 11.3 gpi put a 125 grain broadhead on that arrow and you should blow thru anything you shoot at.
Now since this thread is on the topic of arrow configuration I also have a question I have a 70lb bow which I turned down to 60 lbs now I shoot 400 spine arrows at 8.4gpi 100 grain heads nap quick fletch and I don't remember the grains of those or the inserts, I also have nocturnal lighted nocks. I would like to know if this is a good setup.
You won't be disappointed! I love my FMJ's and don't see myself switching anytime soon! The hit so hard with my muzzy 125 grain broad heads leading the way! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I shoot similar configuration and haven't had any trouble. Although I do try to limit my shots to 30Yards, I shoot Maxima 350 for deer and Gold Tip 400 for Hogs mainly I shoot the GT's on Hogs because of one of those tough Sons of **** runs of with my arrow it don't hurt my pocket book as much
I wouldn't worry to much about ke either. That comes with having a long draw and lots of poundage.....
Draw length is not part of the formula : KE=(m*v²)/450240 where m=mass, v=velocity and 450240 is a conversion constant changing grains to pounds since KE is expressed in ft-lbs for archery purposes.
Obviously and I should have clairified what I meant in my post. My point was it doesn't take "a long draw" as you posted previously. My setups KE is over 81 which is plenty for most game, and I only draw 28.5" and pull 62#'s. Regardless KE is a number I pretty much ignore, I just like math so I always calculate it along with momentum .
Yeah I never have had to worry to much about it. I'd say fps is more important if you have anything more than 60lbs of ke. Just my 2 cents
Can I get you experts to give some input on my configuration I shoot 70lb bow turned down to 60lbs using 400 spine beman ics patriot hunters at 8.4gpi my dl is 28.5.I use 100 grain heads lighted nocturnal nocks and nap quick fletch. I was thinking going up at couple lbs but looking for insight on arrow weight and what I'm using.
how long is your arrow and how many lbs were you going to go up in weight?..if you are planning on going up more then a few lbs,i would go stiffer in spine for arrows.I would go with a .340 if my arrows were 28" or longer and i was shooting more then 62 lbs.
