There is the old 4% rule. It seems to serve as one of the "best" (arguable) ways of figuring it out or getting in the ballpark of if enough.

That's awesome. I'm in the fire side as well. Running on the ambulance until I can get hired full time on a fire department somewhere. I'm hoping I will have something similar to your dad. A lot of places still have good pensions. They just raised the age to like 55 and at least 25 years in. Which hopefully won't be a problem for me since I'm young (22) and will have those years in before the required age.

    I think we're good then :)

I just realized something... and I guess it slipped my mind but a chunk of my yearly bonus is also going into my 401k and considering the decent company match I get, it's starting to add up. That works.

Good discussion guys. It motivated me to open up my retirement stuff through the state of Virginia as well as my investments through my local county government. Although it seems I will not starve once I retire, I will not prosper either. I have to do something to change the game a bit and I am motivated to seek out the options. Thanks guys.

Yes you would try to live off the plan and the money it has made. But when I also have a retirement plan on top of it I will take that lump sum, take no penalty but get hit on taxes and buy like 100-150 acres with it. Then build the "dream home" on 150 acres.
