There are certain fields that I pay close attention to on my way to and from work everyday. I cannot hunt them but always look anyway. Yesterday around 7:15 pm I looked in one field that has wheat in it. I could see the heads of 3 deer above the wheat. When I got beside the field, the deer were approx. 100 yds. from the road. The wheat is tall enough so that all of the deer are covered except their heads and a portion of the necks. I yelled out and they all picked up their heads and one deer looked like he already had antlers at least 8" or more tall. I could only look quickly because of traffic but I must have been seeing things or he must have had something caught on his antlers. I have never seen this much antler around here in the first week of May. Is it possible??
I am anxious to get the cams out and see. I won't put them up until after Turkey season though. (Two more weeks)
If I actually saw what I think I saw, it is the first time I have ever seen anything close to this in the first of May. Everything else I am seeing looks like those in GMMAT's pics. I know this place holds at least 1 big buck (last year anyway) and NC State University owns the property and there is NO HUNTING. On a Sunday afternoon in Aug last year there were 8 bucks in this field all 8 pts or better and the smallest was approx. 16-17" inside spread and the largest at least 20" inside. I will have to pay very close attention and see if I can see him again to verify.
Just kidding they are starting to ge some growth on them. Just think in about a month in a half we will be seeing some serious growth.
I would like to think so, he has many of the same features, but its too early to tell right now. Either way its a good way to start the velvet season off.
A couple showing some potential. Looking forward to checking my cams this weekend to see more antler growth..
I saw 3 on the way to work yesterday morning sporting about 4 or 5 inches of antler. Do they break up into bachelor groups already? It sure seemed like it.
