I competed in a half ironman 3 weeks ago in Muncie, IN. 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13 mile run. Going to go the full distance at the USA Championships in May at Ironman Woodlands Texas. I'd say I'm ready for whatever hunting trip throws my way. 25 mile bike at 5:30 am tomorrow! I don't elk hunt or hunt out west but pretty sure I could handle that with my fitness level - sure would be an awesome time! Good luck to ya all hunting the rugged west! #Grind
^Yeah, but did you tackle a pig? A greasy one? In front of spectators? Bahhahahha!!! Kidding. Keep up the killer workouts!
I hate guys like you. Seriously though, I did sprint tris (3) back in 2009 so I know, kinda, the commitment you've made and the training involved. Hats off to ya! Check out this dude! WOW! http://insider.foxnews.com/2015/07/...-unbelievable-50-triathlons-50-days-50-states
Yeah that dude is nuts... I don't know how you could or would want to do that to your body. In all seriousness, I was out of endurance athletics for a long time. I ran track in college, graduated in 2010 (had 4 solid years of track) and when I got done I didn't want to compete again. In fact, never thought I would want to compete again. Got up to 190 lbs. and was headed in the wrong direction. Then it clicked and I made a commitment last year (4 years removed from college) that I was going to train and compete during the whitetail hunting off season. Best decision I ever made. Back down to 170 lbs. and am as lean and in close to as good of shape as I was at 165 lbs. running D1 track.
The difference is night and day hunting when you're "in shape". I ballooned to 270# a few years back and I hated myself and was always uncomfortable when hunting, whether sitting or walking. FWIW, I haven't seen 190# since the third trimester. :D What D1 school did you attend and compete at? Events? Were you an ISU Sycamore?
HAHA! Third trimester.. But yes, being in shape and hunting is much more enjoyable as opposed to being out of shape and hunting for numerous reasons - too many to list. I am a Sycamore, man you are good!! lol I trained with the cross country team, but I never raced with them. So from August to November I was basically running 50 to 60 miles a week which is actually pretty low compared to what some of my teammates were running. I did it to get ready for indoor track season where I ran mostly 800 meters (1:54 PR). Then when the outdoor season rolled around I raced 800 meters and 400 hurdles (53 seconds PR). Here some, not all of my races/times I ran in college http://www.directathletics.com/athletes/track/706294.html
It's humid for out here... 21%. Muggy. I wrestled the neighbor's angry, horned, 200+lb buck boer goat back to his pen. If it were deer grappling season, I'd be set. :D
I run inclines with my backpack and lift daily @ the gym. Lots of cardio and practical strength training. My scouting trips in the mountains have become a breeze, and I no longer get winded from climbing the mountains. I was @ 200lbs last year and now I'm down to 155. Feels pretty great Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
I hiked up and over this mountain yesterday. The peak is past it. My hubby is the dot on the first peak. The second peak is pretty rough so he didn't go up there. A guy had fallen off while we were ascending. Watching helicopters do a recovery while your climbing is a bit unnerving. The poor man fell 1500' feet. Trudging back. We carried full hunting packs and our bows in case we saw something worth shooting. (archery opener) We saw two small bucks and a 5x5 bull. The one buck was about 200 yards from the parking lot. Lol
