I finally made the decison to buy a new bow after a couple issues with the one I bought last season. I just started tuning the new rig along with shooting indoor league. I also made the hard decision to hunt public land 95% of the season to increase my hunting time. So scouting is my main goal now
This will be my first year hunting but I have been scouting the last month on the public land in the area and on some private land I have access to. I also just picked up my bow last week and am getting it dialed in. I'm trying to at least get 20-30mins a day of practice in just to get more comfortable and steady. Usually, im ramped up for surf fishing by now and warm weather but I find myself waiting/wishing for fall.
Just finalized my buffalo arrows for the OZ trip with iamyourhuckleberry. Next week I'll be swapping out to the 80 lb. limbs and retuning my AP camo Z28 when I get it back from my fiancee's house in Anchorage.
I have been scouting new treestand locations. I am getting ready to hang a stand in them and trim them out for the year. I will later go in around June or July and trim the new green growth. I also go through all my hunting gear and check over everything.
Well, I did a bunch of "electronic scouting" over the winter and came up with 15 stand sights I need to scout this spring. They after I've visited them all I'll make a list on proper entry/exit route, proper wind to hunt, etc. I'll then go in there and make sure I select a tree and get it ready for my climber. They problem is that so far I've only been able to visit ~5 locations. Found some really promising sites. But i need to get over this pneumonia and get back out there before it gets too green and too hot.
-Bought myself a new bow, a 2010 Hoyt Turbohawk. Working on getting it all set up. -Doing some shed hunting and ID'ing a few new stand locations along the way. -And as of yesterday, the land that I killed Muley on is officially paid for and leased for the next 3 years. My dad and I are the only 2 going to be on the place, where as in the past I've had to share it with anywhere from 3-5 other guys.
We went out Saturday and set 3 new stands and cleaned up 3 others, it was a full days work but we shouldn't have to touch that property again till hunting season. Hoping to get out this weekend to my other property and do the same out there.
First post here guys i live in the beautiful wet state of NJ - yesterday built a twenty foot bridge across a small river - cleared out three pieces of land for food plots last week - building a couple ladder stands next week and hoping some turkeys show up
Scouting both new and old areas, getting ready to plant a few food plots, and shooting on the week nights after work.
I have the flatline 340s (8.2 gpi) and love them! They were a huge difference from my 9.6 gpi St. Epics. Since last year... New Bow New Stand and sticks Cut some shooting lanes. Probably will a few more tonight since it's not supposed to be as warm or windy However, right now I'm focused on putting a broadhead (tbd) put into the side of some thunderchickens. Never have been and absolutely pumped to do so.
Running a lot of ground out of state in Montana and E. Wash for sheds. Been to both states once so far and hope to get back to MT later this month. I am trying to find a good bowhunting whitetail spot in MT. I think I found one after this last week. Here in Idaho I am continuiing to scout more country while shedding constantly looking for that next place to hang a bowhunting stand. Its public land or paper ground but still there are nooks and crannys that no one really gets into and hunts right. I have a couple stands I already want to move into some great looking Idaho areas near my home. I will be taking my son whitetail hunting for the first time this fall in E. Wa where he can hunt at the age of 10...unlike here in Idaho ..he needs to be 12. So I've already got him two propertys lined up over there and will bow hunt those too myself. I have a giant buck that I hope made the season. I know he was alive in late bow season. I still need to get into a particular north once the snow melts too look for his sheds. Hes the best buck I have seen and hunted in about 8 years. I believe hes the first net booner I have ever hunted. I have him at about 175 net. on the hoof obsevations from this fall. With the tough winter we had I have no idea how well he will grow this year. I am going to trail cam the area I found him in and try to locate him this summer. I hunted him in a completely new area for the first time last fall. So I am getting acclimated to that particular area as well. as far as bows go, I kinda want a new bow but am too cheap and will most likely just keep shooting my old Liberty for now. I have a couple draws to put in for.. Preference PTs in Iowa in MAY.. Mountain Lion Hunt in Montana, my taxi wants to take me, hes a hardcore lion hunter. And finally I may be going to Sas for whitetails this fall. I have a friend up there that is hooking me up with his outfitter friend near his home area. He's cutting me a very good rate on the hunt IF I decide to go. I need to get some minerals out for the deer, get my sons turkey shotgun sighted in and get ready for turks and bears April 15th ... My son season starts the 13th when he turns 10.. early youth season.. I have found a good amount of turks while shed hunting.
I honestly haven't done a single thing to prepare for this upcoming season. Zilch. Nada. Zero. This weekend I'm going to spend 2-3 hours walking part of one of my spots I didn't set foot on last year just to look for some sheds and see if I see anything that looks promising. The following weekend I'd like to walk some public ground I'm thinking about hunting this fall. I've never been there before and would like to know roughly what I may be getting into come October. Beyond that, I'll be shooting my bow in preparation for the Get Together and then putting cameras out in June/July. In the meantime I'll be relaxing and enjoying life outside of bowhunting for a few months.
With the weather starting to get nice again, I've spent most of the weekend outside. I fired up the tractor and mowed around existing tree plantings and made new ones for this years plantings. Did some hack and squirt on undesirable tree's(mainly locusts & hedge). Burned a few acres of pasture and a couple big brush piles. And sprayed Gly and Oust XP around all tree plantings, while they're still dormant. I plan on planting about 600-700 trees this month. Beyond habitat management, I made some new arrows a couple weeks ago and am practicing up. Hoping to get out turkey hunting this weekend, and will start getting a few game cameras out in about 2 months.
I built a new permanent stand, been running trail cameras for turkeys/deer, and have been shooting on our new backyard 3D range. Each of us shot 700+ arrows last Saturday
Hinge cut a bunch of trees to enhance the bedding areas on my property. Moved a few stands and cleared shooting lanes. Disced up my food plot last weekend. I'll be planting corn in a few weeks. Shooting my bow a few times a week.
How many hours did that take? I've been doing some scouting just about every weekend for the last 2 months. Got my new bow shot on this weekend, hitting good out to 40. With a move in our near future (hopefully), i'm scouting all new areas again.
