What are you currently doing to prepare for this fall? I am still spending as much time as I can walking my areas, and just started fine tuning my setup the other day. Decided I need new arrows looking for a stiffer spine. I will have to wait until they get here to finish. But the bow is well on it's way to being a finely tuned machine :D Going to try out the Easton Flatline D.O.A. 340's. I haven't shot an Easton arrow in years.
Right now I am gauging interest in gaining access to new properties for this fall. My first attempt failed, but the landowner is allowing me to shoot photography on his farm, and I am confident that if I keep in touch with him, share some photos with him and show him what I am about, he'll allow me to hunt soon. Maybe even this fall. I've got a couple calls to make to people back home about joining in on some leases also. A family friend is actually looking to start leasing in Ohio and I am going to pursue that as well. Hunting in Illinois last fall showed me just how fun hunting new places can be. Until 2010, I had hunted my family's piece for 15 years and never even thought of hunting anywhere else. There's something exciting and fun about hunting new places!
Filling out applications. Colorado's must be submitted before Tuesday. Considerating a moose application in both Maine and Vermont. Went through three bows today repairing fiber optics, etc. Need to start shooting the 84 pound X-Force in preparation for my hunt in OZ with Kodiakarcher. I spent the evening stitching up my tattered camo. It's good for another season.
Currently, I'm waiting on a rest for the new bow and procrastinating getting my moose permit application done, I was going to do some scouting this week with all the snow gone but we ended up getting almost a foot of the stuff yesterday, not fair...
Tying up a ton of loose ends in other aspects of life. I need to get both bow dialed to my hunting arrows for turkey season soon. (currently shooting 3D league) My house comes (modular) next month. Once I get that buttoned up, I'll get moving on the hunting stuff. I have one landowner project to do in a few weeks to secure hunting access, but that's as good as it gets for now. Buckeye, what's it cost for you and the fam to make a road trip for a work weekend on my house?
reading, reading, reading, asking questions and more reading. This year will be my first for bowhunting or any hunting so I have tons to learn !
The Maine hunt is definitely a great hunt, if you get the right zone that is, let me know if you draw and what zone and depending on location you'd be welcome to stay at my camp.
I am shooting my recurve and analyzing everything I do to get a smooth and deadly shot come fall. My hunting time will be very limited this fall so I have to make it count at the moment of truth. I cannot afford to be inaccurate. I am going to do something I have never done this year as I am a horrible salesman. I am going to drive around come spring time and ask some farmers if I can hunt on their property with my trad bow. I am going to bring my bow around with me to show them how harmless I am, plus I am going to talk to them about some other things that are going on in my life. I am hoping to gain some access to some private land this year for the first time in my life.
Nothing. Too many projects going on right now. Haven't even picked up my bow since the 1st of the year. I did frost seed my plot a few weeks back, and have been monitoring cams a bit, but other than that, nothing.
waiting for the fresh snow from yesterday to melt so I can do some shed hunting/scouting before the green stuff comes in, been dying to get up north in the woods where we have a couple of nice bucks located for once, but we just can't get rid of the snow. Getting ready to shell out 350 bucks to put in for my kansas lottery tag.Getting ready to buy my 3rd pref point to iowa. Already put in for moose lottery here. Trying to figure out if I am going to bait for bear this year, and if so, where?
Stripping my arrows and refletching them and yeah I know I can get the quikf letch but I like doing this for now. This coming week I need to go move a few stands then I am leaving everything alone until Sept (All my areas are small in size). I will drive around a lot and glass some areas and if I can find some decent bucks in my county I will try to gain access. I have my new Iceman FLX all setup now and I will beginning shooting some this coming week. I will also spend a lot of time with my boys honing their shooting skills for hunting this coming fall. (Frog_slayers first year)
Getting tree stands cleaned up, checking bolts, welds, etc. Shooting a couple 3d shots to stay in tune. Looking over the few places I hunt for better spots to hang stands.
Right now just shed hunting to see what bucks made it through hunting season. Also scouting areas to find ways of getting in and out without disturbing the deer once hunting season starts. The snow is still hindering us in areas. So far shed hunting has been a big disappointment. We aren't finding many sheds to bucks that will be worth hunting next year. We are finding mostly 1.5 and 2.5 year old sheds. Hopefully things turn around ortherwise I will be going into summer scouting blind which isn't the end of the world. It is just nice having history with a few good bucks so you can usually get on them fast to see which one is the one for hunting. Tim
my dad is trying to by 30 acres and im trying to get into new calls and this year im going to try decoys and posibly use more scents
Not a thing, I am more worried about the trout opener in 2 weeks followed by turkey season and the some serious groundhog killin!
After hunting for approaching 40 years I pretty well have everything equipment wise I need to hunt. The only thing I'm scheming on adding to my arsenal is a couple more trail cameras. As far as actual hunting goes, I've been finalizing my game plan on a world class buck by; plotting scouting data and sightings on a terrain topographical map, a trip or two to confirm the existing trail system/rub and scrape lines while looking around casually for some shed antlers. My buddy was lucky enough to find the 2008 sheds and they are beyond impressive. The brow tines are both 12+" with G2-3 10+ and 4's 7". He is an old deer easily 7+ years old this year. We had a bumper acorn crop last year and I'm hoping he'll bust 200" as a net typical. Otherwise, I'm spending my time working and watching basketball games. I'm also reloading a few shells for myself and some friends.
Im always looking at my areas from year to year and putting it all together. I have found some new areas also this year from shedding in other places,,they look fantastic and I cant wait to see some new scenery!
Really any of the central/northern zones are good, I applied for WMD 8 as my first option, I'd just go for the areas with the most tags issued.
