I was at my local proshop yesterday and there was a young kid getting his bow tuned. He says to the tech "can I drill extra holes in my cam to make my bow faster"? I'm thinkin WHAT. He goes on about how he wants his bow to be fast enough to shoot deer at 60-70 yards without jumping the string. I'm standing there thinking, why not just pick up a rifle. If memory serves me right, bowhunting is about how close we can get to the animal, not how long of a shot we can make. I mean for me that's the reason I bow hunt is for the rush and fulfillment of getting one close and even just having the opportunity to take it, even if I don't. I was a kid once and according to my wife I still am, but I loved bowhunting for the same reason back then. Sorry to beotch but people just get so caught up in the whole "I shoot 350fps, what are you shooting?" mentality that we forget what the sport's all about.
Since I was a young kid, I have always hoped (even prayed a few times I am sure) for a situation where I could get close enough to a wild deer to reach out and poke it with an outstretched arm... I have never bowhunted before (other than bowfishing) but I am seriously looking into it. I am 26 and was raised by an avid duck hunter. It wasn't until a couple of weekends with one of my uncles that I got into deer hunting. Dad has recently (in the past 10 years or so) gotten more into deer hunting. This pushed me farther into the deer arena. Hopefully by next season I can be in a stand, waiting for that first deer to walk out. I could care less about IBO speeds or the newest fancy paintjob. As long as the bow fits me and gives me enough energy at distance to do its job, I am happy. I guess ten years ago I would have been enamoured by the newest and fastest bow.
Don't have an acceptable bow... or a decent place to hunt (lost our lease at the end of last season due to the owners selling the land and the new owner being a tree hugger.) the only bow I have is for bowfishing. But I am working on it.
It's a 40# bow... no chance of me taking it into the woods. Not when I am a perfectly capable young man with a minor cash flow problem at the moment. I'm not starving and I wouldn't dare attempt to take a deer with such a light bow.
not sure what your state regs are but here in arkansas 40 lbs is totally legal and effective weight for shooting deer. i think some states go lower than that. if you keep your shots under 20 yards then 40lbs will get the job done.
