It's the same in Illinois. But I don't know if it's an antler RESTRICTION- we can still shoot it. There's no problem with killing that deer as long as you have an ANTLERLESS tag.

Correct me if I'm wrong, (I've never had to hunt with antler restrictions) but if you live in the states that have restrictions to where the buck must have "X" amount of inside spread, you are NOT allowed to even shoot a buck that doesn't meet that criteria, right?

In Illinois we can shoot any deer we see (as far as antler size goes) and if it is a BB or (I believe, could be wrong) has 3" or less (small spikes) then we tag it as a doe or antlerless- there's no ANTLER RESTRICTION saying we can't shoot that deer.

    If that makes sense???

EXCELLENT question for the AR state guys .... what happens if you shoot a buck with 3" spikes? Do you use your doe tag? Do you go to jail, not passing GO?

I guess I misunderstood. The 3+" on either side only matters as far as designation, how you report the animal. We have "buck", "doe" or "buttonbuck". You are allowed to shoot anything but if it has more than 3" on one side it has to be reported as a buck, if not then it is reported as a button buck.

So what constitutes a "buck" here you hunt, Jeff?

From TPWD handbook, and this applies in my county.
    1. at least one unbranched antler, or
    2. an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. The inside spread requirement does not apply to any buck that has an unbranched antler.

No minimum number of points. It could be a four point with a 13 inch inside spread and it would be legal I believe

In IL antlerless tags good for bucks with antlers 3" or less.

And the State Grounds I hunt both have 4 point on one side minimums...and that has helped more bucks get to 2.5

On my/dad's ground - it's 3.5 yr old minimum for those that have killed nice bucks...but for those that still get all shook up over a 6 point...have at it!...I won't ever stop a buddy or family member from shooting a deer that makes them happy:)

AK: None. Buck = deer with scrotum/penis. Evidence of sex must be naturally attached to the meat until processed.
