What do you guys consider to be acceptable groups for hunting? I stress over my groups and it aggravates the crap out of me when I don't hit where I want to. I have a spot on my target about an 1 inch in diameter and I want to be in that dot at 20 and 30 yards. I want to be in a group of about 3 in. at 40, 4 in. at 50, 5 in. at 60 and anything past 60 I still want to stay with in a 5 in. group. Is that a reasonable set for grouping? What do y'all think is reasonable groups?
Kills one on a deer is about 12" around. So your good out to 60 lol. My favourite way to practice is long range. Ill walk out onto my range and fire 40 arrows from 60 and 70 yards. After that I walk up to 30 and fling only 3-4 arrows. It feels like your at point blank teaching your eye the long rsnge shots. Those 30 yard groups are so tight I damage arrows often. I think it's effective way to practice because it makes realistic hunting shots feel like their point blank. Which is something you need when the fever kicks in.
I personally would say that at 20, if you can get two of three arrows inside of a one inch diameter, your good. Your group expectations from 40 to 60 yards I would consider fair. 20 to 30 yards, I would think anything inside of a 2 inch diameter is good.
I try to keep all touching 20 Yards in, no more than 3" at 30, 4" At 40, 5" at 50, 6" at 60 and so on. for hunting..and anything tighter than that is a very very good day..
My first pin is 0-26 yards I shoot usually only 1-2 arrows at that yardage because they are usually touching or hitting feathers. Second pin is 27-36 yards, which stays at about 2-3 inches. Third and final pin is 37-46 yards, which stays around 3-4. So sounds like to me mine and your groups are about the same, but yall that are shooting 50+ yards at deer are OGs cause I would never try that lol.
Your groups sound pretty good. Keep in mind a lot can happen out to 60 yards or more so always remember grouping range vs. effective killing range can be 2 different things when it comes to bowhunting.
I try to use the system of the first digit in the yards as the good group size. 20=2", 30=3", 40=4"...
1" per 10 yards is a pretty common unit of measure for good hunting groups. Target shooters might demand better accuracy but if you can shoot a 4" group at 40 yards EVERY time with no floaters, you are shooting pretty well in my opinion.
That seems very reasonable and a good goal to strive for. With that said the Internet does produces some exceptional shooters that probably will come along and do better.
long s you get groups in side a paper plate. Any bigger you need to practice. I am punching pins at 30 yards.
