Backdrop, my son will be four years old in June. Tale of two parents... Has a father who is very active and always doing something. Has a mother who likes to watch TV.

He gets to tag along with me for a lot of physical activity, whether it be yard work or just rough housing with me. He also takes two days of taekwondo and one day of gymnastics to keep him active and busy. These classes are great because they teach him so much more than just taekwondo and gymnastics moves...

Anyhow, I am looking for ideas of fun stuff we can do together especially this time of year, other than making snowmen and sled riding. If it teaches him something or introduces him to something new even better.

    So, shoot me some ideas.

I introduced my oldest two to soccer, gymnastics, and swimming when they were 2-4 years old. Not much you can do together at that age other than maybe you coaching a little guy soccer team, or possibly swimming together which would be a lot of fun. My 8 year old son and I train 2-3 days a week in jiu-jitsu together and it has been a fun way for us to bond.

We have been building the crap out of model cars. Something I haven't done since I was a kid. He is in Cub Scouts, so we built his pine wood derby car this week for the big race tomorrow. I admit, I run out of things to do in the winter too. If we ever get some solid ice we will be ice fishing.

I have been taking mine fishing since he was walking. He once fell out of the boat in early March and I had to pull him in by the straps on his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle lifejacket. He has loved water since day one.

Thanks for the ideas so far, I am more looking for active activities though. We have plenty of stuff to do while couped up in the house.

What about fishing for pan fish? Some of my best memories were my dad taking me out with some night crawlers and a ultralite and catching a couple dozen fish. Its fun as an aadult too, and it can be done right from shore. Maybe a camping trip with a buddy and his son of around the same age, get you both out of the house and you can take him small game hunting and fishing.

Building bird houses. Playing King of the Mountain. Hiking. Making movies was a blast. Collecting salamanders bugs and snakes from rotten logs. And our favorite... Spider Hunting (at night with a flashlight, their eyes shine in the dark but you find all sorts of other critters too like frogs, worms, mice, snakes. Hold the flashlight in front of your nose and the whole world lights up.)

He likes fishing, but loses interest fairly quickly. I would think his attention span toward it will increase as he gets older.

My daughter Is 5 years old now but I started her out a couple years earlier with the things I listed below during the winter/colder months. She Is also In dance during the winter but hasn't started yet. That will start next month. My daughter can't stay put for nothing. She's very active and not much for watching TV or playing video games.

Ice fishing. As you can see she also helps me with cleaning fish.

That's a hard question for me to answer. We take our girls (Miriam is five and Michelle is going on three.) everywhere with us. Mostly that involves going out into the woods. Even if we're aren't hunting, we like to scout or just spend time out there. We also take them fishing in season. Miriam actually went out hunting with us this past Fall and saw me take a deer with my muzzleloader. She has learned to be very quiet and stealthy.

My husband very much enjoys drinking beer so we take them with us when we go out to the bar also. They like to "dance" with their daddy when there's a band, and they also enjoy pizza and tacos.

They're small like I am so organized sports type stuff isn't a real option. But we do spend lots of time outdoors. That's our main thing. We're planning on some snowshoeing once we get a decent amount of snow here.

Mine learned how to stack firewood at that age :D

I can't really add alot more than what has already been said. Mine have done sports basically year round since age 5, they hunt, fish, AND my wife has taught them to watch TV like a champ (to my dismay, but oh well). They also do play video games, though we limit the amount of time.

Both my kids were shooting 3-d at 2 years old.

My son started fall baseball at 4 1/2. Pitching machine league. Hit his first homerun at age 6.
