Sorry for your loss. I've been through that a couple times. It never gets easier.

Sorry to hear that. It's amazing how they become members of the family. It's tough when you lose a friend after so many yrs.

Whenever you lose a pet it takes a piece of your heart with it. It's hard for people that don't really care for animals to understand the pain of losing one. I've lost horses and dogs in my life and it really pains your heart. My wife just lost her dog, but she waited a while and got a new puppy. We weren't sure we were ready for that yet, but it has truly been a blessing. The new puppy doesn't take away the pain, but it sure keeps you occupied. God bless!

I know just what you are talking about. 6 years ago my old pal Sparky was getting older and became very sick. He was always a great dog and didn't like what was happening to him. His quality of life was suffering and I had to do the hardest thing I have ever had to do and say goodbye. I had another dog at the time and about a year later he too passed away. We didn't have a dog for about 6 months and always talked about getting another but couldn't do it because we were still sad about the passing of our two beloved pets. It was a couple of months after hurricane Katrina went through New Orleans and my daughter who is in the veterniary field went on a humanitarian mission to treat sick dogs that were abandoned. They brought about 50 orphaned dogs back to Vermont in the hope that good homes could be found. I was on a hunt in Newfoundland and called home via a sat phone from the wilderness. My wife told me that we were going to be a temporary home to a little black and white 4 month old mixed breed named Fannymae. I smiled when I heard that and that night when the generator was shut down I lay in my bunk and closed my eyes thinking about how great it would be to get home and meet Fannymae. The hunt ended and the long drive home was capped off when I drove into the yard and a very small sickly looking dog ran up to me and leaped into my arms. Since that time she has gotten stronger and is very healthy and turned out to be the best pet I ever had....a real gift. My heart was broken when Sparky and Patch went to the rainbow bridge but the amazing thing was my heart was still large enough to make room for yet another pet...the best one ever.

I am glad you liked the poem Walt. It always chokes me up with happiness when I read it.

My condolences, the loss of a loved one is always hard. You have to rely on the good memories to help you past the difficult times.
