The last few years on Father's Day weekend a bunch of us have been getting together going to a Traditional shoot In Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Usually my dad makes the trip down but couldn't this year for other reasons. There was 9 of us that made the trip this year, our biggest group ever. The shoot was outstanding. There's 3 rounds of 20 targets each round. Each round represents a different habitat. The 1st round was the Minnesota round with Minnesota big game animals and shot scenarios (thick cover and narrow shooting lanes) 10 to 20 yard shots. The 2nd round was the western round with western big game animals and a touch farther shots (15 to 25 yard shots). The 3rd round was the African round with African type animals along with some very tricky shots. Shot distances here were anywhere from 5 yards to 25 yards. Let me tell you them 5 yard shots are far from easy. Wow!! There was also 2 metal targets with the vitals cut out (3 to 4 Inch holes) at 15 yards. I made It through both metal targets, got lucky!!!

Last year was my best ever score at this particular shoot which ranked me In the top 10 out of 100 or so other recurve shooters. There's a few different classes- Mens recurve, mens primitive, mens longbow and the same for the women and also a cubs division. This year I blew my high score away surprisingly being I haven't hardly shot my bow at all this Spring. I'm by no means much of a competitor at these traditional shoots but It's kinda neat to see how I ranked up against some of the world class shooters and everyone else that attends this shoot. I didn't know this until we arrived at the shoot this morning but Rod Jenkins Is putting on a seminar some time this weekend here at this shoot. He's also going to shoot the course. I'm really looking forward to seeing his score. If I would've known earlier that he was going to be there I would be attending his seminar. When I found out the results I'll post up how I did. Sorry for not having no pics to show. It's a pain to run a camera and shoot at the same time. One of these years I gotta get my g/f to come with and snap pics while were shooting. It would be much easier.

I got your message Dave. Sorry I couldn't answer the phone being we were busy shooting and BSing having a blast. Maybe tomorrow If I can get some free time I'll call you back. Thanks for calling though bud!!

Steve, that souds like a fantastic day! The phenomenon you experienced in regards to you not having shot your bow very much and you still shooting your best score ever is because of the lack of stress. When an athlete does not think too hard or too long and just reacts with instinct they perform better. Your shooting skills just took over..GOOD job!

You very well could be right Brett. You know the stress I've been dealing with. The stuff you and I talked about via PM's a month or so back pertaining to last years deer season . Your right too, I didn't think too much either at this shoot other then making sure I was doing proper form and having a blast with the great company I had around. Some of these guys I shot with I haven't saw In 4 to 5 years. It felt like the good old days!!

The results are up. Once you click on the link below click the 2010 results tab under traditional 3-d shoot. I'm In the mens recurve class, there was 85 of us In that class. Can't find Rod Jenkins score either.

Thanks guys!! 7th place out of 190 people total at the shoot who kept score Isn't to bad. I was thinking I'd place somewhere In the top 5. The one target I missed out of the 60 targets ended up getting me good. It was a tough shot though. You had to sit down on a seat and lean down to shoot under the branches. The shot was about 20 yards. I shot low. I actually glanced off of the armpit of the whitetail.

What a great confidence booster this shoot was. It did me a ton of good, specially my head.

You finished 7th with a dropped target? That's a great finish.

BTW....don't expect great things from Rod all the time. My buddy Page got paired with him in the IBO worlds, last year (modern longbow) and spanked him pretty handily.

    Congrats.

I am kinda surprised folks keeping alot of score. All the shoots I have been on, I can't say I have seen trad guys keep score. Especially the primitive guys. Usually the only score I keep is how many arrows I lost over a weekend.

Thanks Jeff. Still ticks me off I missed that shot!

I heard that from another person too that he's not always on but then again who Is I guess. Another guy at the shoot mentioned your buddy Page's name and has shot with him before. He said Page Is GOOD!! I over heard these guys talking about some Page guy so I asked where he was from? The guy says from NC and showed me a picture of him and Page posing at some shoot somewhere. Sure enough!! Rod never did post his score for whatever reasons at this shoot. Maybe he didn't keep score either, who knows.
