Got to work this morning planned to work a half day then head out. I got an email at 10:30 stating we had a meeting at 11:00. Well it seems we have been sold to a company that services mortgages cheaper and that around 7/31 they will own us with about 83% of their employees in India or Uruguay. So it looks like I'll be out of work in August. So now with the wife out of work we may be looking to move to get work somewhere.
Thanks, the wife is more receptive to moving out of California now. Her mom may even be willing to follow says her place is too big for just her.
Damn man... I know the feeling. It is just awful out there. There are literally NO JOBS in my line of work (computers, I.T.), and if there are, they want freakin' masters degrees and all the certifications up the wazoo. I know guys who ended up having to totally get out of I.T. and go do something else to make ends meet. The guy you see mixing paint at Home Depot? Pfffftttt... The dude probably has a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering and is out of work. The older guy working as an assistant manager at Pizza Hut? He's probably a laid off I.T. professional, and had to do something, anything, whatever, just to get by. My wife's daycare center is on the verge of closing down too. They only have 17 children and are barely getting by (they used to have (at max) about 75-80 kids). So many people are out of work, that they obviously can't afford daycare, so they keep their kids home. So anyway, scottymack, I understand where you're coming from. I'm in the same boat, but unfortunately, I can't move, as I still have college age kids living at home, I'm active in my community, Masonic lodge, etc.. But you just have to do whatever you have to do to survive.
Tough break for all the people out of work during these bad times. I have noticed that there appears to be work available around here but pay scales aren't probably what they are in the larger areas. I think it is criminal when a company outsources and pushed work off shore just to earn more on the backs of the American workers who made them rich.
Butch, I know the feeling. I run a specialized Workforce Management database so I am looking for anything, I may even have to go back to collections to cover the bills.
Scottymack, I know what you mean. The fortunate thing with me is I'm retired US Coast Guard. I draw a military pension and have VA benefits and Tricare. But then, I obviously can't live off my retirement (it pays my mortgage with a few $$ left over). So, I have to look at anything and everything out there. For everyone: I looked up the current unemployment rate for Virginia (your state my vary). The max rate of unemployment is: $378 a week (plus a $25 stimulous from Obama-lama-ding-dong). Total: $403 a week. Divide that out as a salary and it calculates out to just a hair over $10 bucks an hour. Length of unemployment is: 26 weeks, and you can easily qualify for an additional 26 weeks. According to the VEC (Virginia Employment Commission), Obama/Congress has expanded the unemployment length to a total max of 99 weeks and no more. Whether that's true, I don't know.
At least that is something Butch. Good chance to do some soul searching and explore changing fields a bit and receiving some money at the same time. Look at it as a challenge and opportunity. Best of luck.
Butch, I found a place on line for call center careers and had a lot of IT jobs. I have applied for about 15 jobs nationwide this weekend. I just applied for VSP for a workforce management position. The wife has a friend that is the director of HR there so it will be interesting. The scariest part of this whole mess is that the largest mortgage service company in the US has 80% or more of it's employees in either India or Uruguay. That means that personal information on loans is going out of the country.
hey that does stink, just keep your feet on the ground and your sunny side up. Things in life have a way of working out i am sure this is just a step thats seems rough , but will lead to greener pastures. good luck
