I decided to test my feathers at 30 yards wet with fixed broadheads today to see what kind of results I would get.I have done this in the past but never actually soaked the feathers like I did today.I was able to repeatedly hit the same spot with 4" helical feathers.I really wasn't surprised. Then I decided to test the Razr 2" helical feathers and I was very disapointed that they didn't do so well.It was actually a gamble if they would even hit the target wet but dry, they were hitting the same spot. With a field point they did fine wet as well so imo, they would be fine with mechanicals but not fixed blades.Might be able to put hairspray on them and get better results but for now,I am sticking with 4" helical. For the record,I am shooting 370 grain ACC's out of an AM 35 at 58#'s @ 28" draw around 260 fps.
Good to know and good idea. I had planned on using Blazer fletched arrows if it looked like rain and save the feathers for dry days. I think I'll do the test you did with my 4" helical fletched shafts. Again, good idea and thanks!
I agree with that entirely. Personally I like the way feathers look and I wouldn't ever think twice about letting one fly in the rain out of a well tuned bow. I switched because my blazers (hopefully fusions too) were more durable...
Sounds like I may have potentially just wasted like $30 on Razyr feathers! I think the new dozen shafts I just got I will fletch up half and half between blazers and razyrs, and see how different they fly.
Leave the razyrs home when you come up here. Between the rain and the brush you're just asking for trouble. The Blazers are proven to be "Kodiak Tuff".
I actually like the Razr's and was really going to make the switch but not after what I saw today. You MIGHT be able to get them to shoot well wet with some hair spray but that showed me what I needed to know about them.Dry they work great. Jeff, you have probably seen me say it for years on these forums that wet feathers fly fine but I took it a step further and soaked them today.I am not sure that it is a wives tail,It might be a trad thing from years gone by with the huge broadheads they used to shoot on wood arrows and shooting off the shelf. That might make a difference(maybe you can test it)but with loops and releases out of compounds, feathers are fine when wet. For those that don't think feathers are durable enough.I am rough on feathers.I smash them, shoot them up and when they get really tattered.I just soak them in water, rub them with my hand , shake them and let dry. They look new new afterwards.
I don't need room for maybes and kind ofs in my setup...even if it was fine, it would be in the back of my mind now. They look sweet, but they will remain in the tackle box, and the new dozen will get all blazers just like the last dozen. Thanks for the thread!
If you want red-barred and white barred right winged razyrs, I have 24 whites and 12 reds, never opened. Just enough for a perfect dozen.:D
