My buddy and I been wanting to Hunt the 40 mile herd in the Yukon Charley River preserve, we had both hunted Caribou several times before and for us it was important for this hunt to take place in that location. We try several times to secure a spot with our preferred transporter( I am sure you all can guess who) to fly us into the area however we could not get it booked. We ended up going with the only other option which happened to be excellent albeit very expensive.
Fast forward to 2020 and Covid was reading havoc on our plans, with that said we jumped through the hoops and made it happen. We had and wonderful time and the hunt was everything we wanted and more.

I killed my bull at 61 yards after getting pinned down when the group of bulls I stalked decided to bed down for two hours. The rest of the trip I played spotter for Russel and was happy to see him kill a great bull. I had blast hunting with him, and we planned another hunt together already. I am already looking for repeat as I want to get back in and do this hunt again.
I will forgo the long story this time and post some pictures of the hunt.

What beautiful country. Getting to hunt, and be successful, is just icing on the cake.
Great 61 yard shot by the way. I know caribou are often a longer shot in that open country.

Beautiful looking place and congrats. Curious and I’m assuming so but does Caribou meat have silver skin like a whitetail??

It is a good feeling, more so when you can do it all on your own. Nice feeling to see work and planning paying off

Thanks, yes that country lends itself to some longer shots for sure.

Yes, they do. They are ever so slightly more marblized, especially in the Hinds and lions. Caribou fat is way more palatable then deer fat, however like bear fat it will spoil during a prolonged freeze.
Summer caribou is arguably the best meat in NA.

Do too the location we where hunting, the distance was making it logistical hard to take a direct super cub flight in. As such we got ferried to a NFS air strip just off the Yukon river. It was repurposed from a Gold mine. It was a really cool place. There is still some gold mining taking place on an Individual level and as such some cabins being using near the original sight.
After a meat load was flown out time Constraints necessitated that we overnight at the air strip, instead of setting up camp we hiked to mining settlement and used a public use cabin...it was a welcome change from sleeping in kifaru on ground for the pass week. The next morning while waiting on the Cesessna we explore a bit, some great history still there and the dredge is still down closer to Yukon....enjoy the pictures.
