I'm gonna do some bricks, soon, Hooker. I'm just now trying to get used to the road bike. Everyone I talk to tells me the first .5 - 1mi. after the bike and on your feet are hell (disoriented feeling). From there....it gets easier. You agree? Glad you chimed in. Thanks.
Yeah, you should get your legs back after a half mile. Enjoy the training. They are a blast. Before long you will be training for an Ironman.
If you saw me swim, you'd keep your hands off your wallet....lol. I keep hoping the next session in the pool is gonna be my "aha" moment. This sucks. I was at the pool at 6AM, today....and I may go back, this evening. Sooner or later it's gotta come together. Hooker.....how far did you/do you take these? Thanks for the encouragement (everyone).
Pool sessions? I've never taken pool sessions. Most of my swim training has been in open water. I'm really not too serious about tri's yet, I mostly do them for a change of pace about once or twice a year. When I do decide to train for an Ironman, I will take some formal pool sessions though. It would be a must since my swimming is so weak.
LOL Alot of my family members have raced snow machines. A cousin of mine was racing the I 500 (the premier 500 mile cross country race) in '99. He smoked his sled on the second day, DNF. This old guy made it through day 2 and died of a heart attack on day three. We always bust on Terry for getting beat by the dead guy.
June 20th huh ?? On every step/stroke I want you to conciously or subconciously be signing Happy Birthday to Bob, Happy Birthday to Bob..........
Did my first 2 triathlon's ever already this summer and several 5k's. Now just got signed up for my first half Ironman at Stealhead in 2 weeks! Haven't really trained for it but shouldn't have any problem completing it!
I wish you luck.....but feel for ya....lol. I've got the half-marathon in Oct.. My last 3 long runs have been 7mi.; 8.3mi. and 9mi.. I ain't gonna lie. They HURT (at 45). I can't imagine running a 13.1mi., after swimming 1.2mi. (which I couldn't do, currently) and biking 56mi. (which I could do....but it, also, would kill me). Based on my run volume (and long runs), getting the nutrition right on a half ironman would scare me MOST. I've got sprint tris scheduled for 7/24; 8/22 and 9/19. Give 'em hell! Let me know how it goes. And, let's look at Augusta 70.3 in 2011.
Good luck with it Jeff! I've just recently got interested in running and signed up for a 5k in March. I may do one before then too.
You know, Jeff, you and I never mixed well and never got along great. Just the nature of things. But I have to say, I am impressed. I sit here letting my body go and go as I pass the hump of life, and you are staying in shape of a teen ager. My laziness is starting to affect my quality of life, my hiking, my hunting, or just cutting firewood. I am rootin for you.
It's affected my life, too....BC. I used to be almost 50#'s heavier. I have to watch it all the time. Get yourself a bike. I'm not kidding. It's a lot of fun. And, what else can you do to burn 1K cal./hr.? Thanks for the nice words. Ferg's a machine. We've talked a little....and he's made great leaps. I just hope (and I mean this, sincerely) he's respecting the 1/2 Ironman distance. It's no joke.
For real, I just read where he said he has one in 2 weeks and has not trained for it. Unless he is just a natural athlete, he is seriously going to crash. I consider myself a decent athlete, and there is no way I'd do the swim without months of training. I could finish the run/bike without much training, but I wouldn't be able to really do it. I'd be in the back with the soccer moms.
I KNOW Ferg's been training. And, I'm NO ONE to question him in this endeavor. Just wanted to clear that up. The 1.2mi. swim/56mi. bike/13.1mi. run is a HUGE endeavor. Like I said, "I" can't imagine the nutritional needs my body would have for that distance. That would spook me, MOST! With a wetsuit (I'm hoping it's wet suit-legal), that'll help on the swim. I know he's been hammering the bike. Getting one's nutrition right, when you're on course for more than 2 hours is CRITICAL. Being out there for 5.5hrs (or more) magnifies that MANY times over. I have a co-worker who's done 2 HIM's; 2 marathons and scores of olympic dist. (and shorter) triathlons. He wound up in the medical tent, Sunday......on an olympic dist. race. I wish Ferg nothing but success!
I am totally going in to my half Ironman with no real time expectations. The swim and bike will be easy. I should really be finished with the swim around 31 minutes depending on water conditions and the bike should be just at or a hair under 3 hours so that only leaves the 13.1 half marathon. With running being my worst discipline it is going to be a real challenge. But I should have over 4 hours to get it completed and realistically I should be able to get it done around 2:45. So that should put my overall time around 6.5 hours!
