I went through the registration form, Thursday night......looked over at my wife.....and hit the send button. I'm now signed up for my 1st ever triathlon, June 20th. It's a "sprint" distance tri, held here in my hometown. I picked up my road bike, yesterday, and took it for a short, 10mi. inaugural ride. It's faster than I'm capable of riding it (due to FEAR!), but I'm hoping I'll get more comfortable, as I put more miles on it. Seeing a swim coach, Mon. AM @ 6:00. I'm hoping she'll help me get over my apprehensions in the pool. I feel like I'm fighting the water, rather than swimming, currently. The run discipline.....I'm not worried about (actually, I'm not worried about the cycling, either). I'm already training at 1.5X the event distances (in the bike/run....training at 16-20mi. on the bike and running 4.5mi). The swim - has me spooked, and that's the 1st event. The swim's just under 1/4mi. The bike distance is 12mi....and then we'll run a 5K. If everything goes well, I'll do my 2nd event 27days after the 1st. I'm down 8#'s from my beginning weight.....and hopefully they'll keep coming off. My target is 185#'s by Sept. (for my elk hunt.....which is the main reason I'm doing all this). I'm at 196#'s, currently. I'll let you guys know how I do......if/when I finish!:D
I don't think your the type to start something and not finish. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if you placed in the top 10. Good luck and don't forget to remind your new swim coach about shrinkage.
Chris... I'm gonna be training with a guy who's 245# and swims a mi. with ease. This group of athletes are unbelievable. I'd say the averages will be: 1:45/100yds swim.....18-19mph bike....and around 8:30-8:45/mi. run. I've got a LONG way to go. My goal is to not finish last in my age group. I've never raced ANYTHING.
Go get em Jeff. Anything we do to positively effect our health is great. You are going to be in great shape.
Good luck! Just talked to JFergus and he's training for the same thing. He said he dropped 15 # this month.
I'll be watching from the sofa. LOL You won't win... but you can finish. Have fun and then enjoy your accomplishment
Hell no I won't win....lol. I won't win my age group. These guys (and gals) are damn serious athletes. I'm just trying to see if I'm capable. I keep hearing Dean's brother saying to him (from the hockey movie 'Youngblood') "To them you're just another wetback, crossing the border to play their game". Some of these people have been racing for years and years (and training in at least one of the disciplines all their life). Should be fun. That's how I'm approaching it.
I thought I saw his name, somewhere. He just bought one HELLUVA BIKE! I hope he does great! I just got home from doing my first 10K. Aerobically, I did fine. I wasn't prepared for it taxing my joints like it did, though. Hopefully, I'll recover quickly. Good luck Ferg!
Good Luck to you and furg, thats something i can't even dream of doing and im atleast half your age.:D
That's freaking awesome. I ran my first 5k last year, which wasn't a stretch for me, but it was cool competing. I actually got second, but lots of the others walked their dogs . I'm rooting for you man.
Funny you should say that, T.... I saw a shirt a guy had on that read on the back.... "Don't pass me. I'm not in your age group":D
Sprint tri's are good fun. And don't worry about the swim too much, you can make up for a bad swim on the bike and the run. I'm a horrible swimmer, but I usually place in my age group just because I'm pretty fast on the bike and on my feet. Definitely practice the cycling, then running afterward. Your legs are going to feel like jello.
