Well, I wasn't gonna do it this year because I just really liked my AlphaMax but.......after shooting the new Maxis 35 I brought her home. Cool, but not really the point of the thread. What do you guys think of this?

Back in the day, 70 pounds was the norm, and, in most cases it was needed to get the speed. I've been shooting a 70# bow for as long as I can remember. But working in the shop has shown me, time and time and again, this high poundage isn't needed anymore. I got the 60# version and have it maxed out at 62#'s. Since bows are most efficient on the upper end, I didn't want to get a 70 and back it down. And besides...........If I had 10 more pounds to play with well........I would.

    So.......62 lbs, 398 grain arrow (6.4 gpp) and she's shooting 292 fps on a 30" draw. Producing 75 lb's of KE tell me.............why do I need to shoot 70??

It seems to me that lower poundage is the way to go. That's PLENTY of speed and more than enough KE. And it's better for my shoulder, BONUS!

IN CASE you hit that shoulder.

Every little bit helps, I'd think. (Understanding that it is tougher to hold)

I read where Bill Winke shoots 90# (maybe it was 80#?). IMO, he knows what's up.

LOL........I knew that argument wouldn't take long. Not gonna make any difference. And besides........how well are we going to be able shoot if we can't pull our bow back at all?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm saving my shoulder. I'm not going to tear myself up for an 'in case' that can be 'what if'd' till we're blue in the face. ;)

I backed my 82nd Airborne off to 62# this year and couldn't care to chrono it now... it was shooting a 384 grain arrow at 328 f.p.s. and I know for sure it has plenty of power to push an arrow tipped with a Rage 2-blade right through a buck and stick more than half the arrow into the ground.

I may purchase a new bow this year and if I do, I will be getting a 60lb model and probablly end up shooting it in the 56-58# range. It is easier on the shoulders, more than enough to kill any animal that I am going to hunt, and the biggest bonus is that it makes extended shooting more enjoyable!

I have never killed a deer with more than 63#. They all died the same :)

If you can pull 70 with no issue, pull it .... iff its 60, old man, pull 60 ..... why not use a 50? That is more than enough to kill a deer .......I remember another guy goin to seed with this..... it must have something to do with the name :D

I've had to go back to 60 lbs. this year because of a slightly injured shoulder or I would not be able to hunt. Actually its cranked down to 58 lbs. now. One more change I will make for next season is going to heavier arrows.

I want a certain performance out of my arrow. I'll shoot the poundage that gives that performance.

IMO, backing a 70 down to 60 or even a 60 down to 50 doesn't not really affect the bow performance anymore and, with the quietness of todays bows, doesn't really make a difference in noise either.

I am for a person shooting what is in their comfort zone and shooting what they want, whether it is 80, 70, 60, 50 or 40. Like Tony said, if we all just shot "what was needed to kill deer' then we would all be shooting 40 or 50 pound bows. Women do it and have zero problems, I'm sure us men could do it too ;).

Not yet, but it is set up and will likely be used the second half of the season. I set it up to shoot the Bloodrunners.

I've been interested to hear from someone that shoots an Alphamax and then bought a Maxxis. Does it shoot noticeably better than the Alphamax? I have the Alphamax 35 and I love it......it's hard to imagine anything shooting better.

    Don't blame you one bit.

But like I said, IF you can pull and hold that poundage, it wouldn't hurt, if you mistakenly hit the shoulder.

    Good luck!
