This is the first bear I have seen on my trail cam and I am not that good with weight guessing a bear. I was thinking 300-400, but I honestly don't know. What do you think it may be? PRMS0427.jpg

Hard to really judge his size with nothing as a reference. I'm going to say somewhere around 175#-200#

Really hard without anything to reference size. My best guess is 200 or so.

Thanks for the replies! How much weight do you think the little fella could pack on by the fall? We can't hunt bear until around Thanksgiving and I really don't want to shoot him if he is under 200. I wish he was bigger, but even though he isn't, ever since he showed up we haven't been seeing as many deer on the cameras.

Depends on what he finds for food but they can really pack the weight on the last few weeks before they den up In the fall. He'll tack on all of 75lbs this summer and more come fall If the food is plentyfull.

The coat will probably look better come this fall too. All the bears I've seen in the spring look pretty ragged because they've been hibernating for months on end. That one looks pretty good though, even now!!

Seeing the size of the trees around that bear I'd say the guesses by the rest would be about right. Not sure how big the bears get around where you are but that looks to be about a 3 year old animal. Would make some nice hams and pepperoni for sure!

Black Bear Killed After It Wanders Into Hospital

Authorities say a full-grown black bear was shot and killed after it wandered into a Rocky Mount hospital.

Franklin County Sheriff Quint Overton says the 300-pound male bear was first spotted walking down West Court Street Tuesday night. When the bear wandered in front of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital nearby about 9:10 p.m., it activated a sensor that opened the hospital's doors.

Lieutenant Karl Martin of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries says the bear walked through a couple of hallways and into a computer room with glass windows. He says two Rocky Mount police officers were nearby and yanked the door shut behind the bear.

Officers planned to sedate the bear, but they were worried what could happen if the bear got loose. An officer shot the bear twice and killed it.

No one was injured. Martin says the computer room sustained minor damage.

175 to 200 would be my guess. Put a metal fence post in next to the feeder with white paint marks on it to help gauge his height.
