my brothers in beer, pray a moment of silence. The local brewery I have been working with, and who are gearing up to offer me a job by the end of this year (WOOT!) discovered a serious quality control issue with their flagship beer.

193 cases of 22oz bombers are being destroyed because they are unsellable.

*removes hat and bows head in silence. A single manly tear is shed.*

instead of tasting like Peanut Butter Porter, it tasted like... coffee syrup mixed with malt liquor :jaw:

I enjoyed a bottle of this sunday night. Very good barleywine style ale. still have 1 bottle that i plan on saving for another year or so horndog.jpg

This brew was aged since 2011 in port wine barrels. limited release of 300 bottles. well worth the 20$ a bottle.

I had a White Rascal from Avery last night that we brought home from Boulder. Its a light belgian style that I enjoy a lot. But, I pretty much loved everything they had on tap.

I had a brown ale made by them last weekend, very nice brew for being in a can.

the problem with canned beers has, historically, been the "beers" that were canned, not the can itself ;)

I don't mind canned beer as long as they haven't sat for a long time.

this is a great point. Breweries like Anheuser Busch, Miller, and Coors have historically canned beer that I find undrinkable - being canned makes no difference to the quality of the product.

Oskar Blues started the "craft beer in a can" movement which is picking up more and more steam as time goes by. According to CraftCans.com, there's now over 1000 canned craft beers, which gives me plenty of choice!

We took the tour at Upslope brewery in Boulder the other day. It is a very small operation and consisted of about 10 of us and a brew master. He said that a can is the preferred container to store beer. The cans now have liners so the beer never comes in contact with the aluminum. Also, he said a can seals up 100% where a bottle will not. With changes in temperature, bottle caps can allow oxygen into the beer. Another point he made was the fact that cans never allow any light to touch the beer. He said it has been an uphill battle against backwards thinking, but cans are definitely going to be the future of the craft beer industry. The White Rascal we brought back from Avery was in a can and they also said that cans do a better job of preserving the beer. They also mentioned that allowing a beer to get warm and then chilling it back down will have little to no impact on flavor if it is kept in a can.

That was one of the beers they had on tap in the tasting room and I also enjoyed it very much. They had one extremely "hopped" beer that was a little beyond my comfort zone, the rest of them were all very good in my opinion.

Love Oskar Blues. Surly is another great brewery that cans all of their beers. And of course, Heady Topper also comes in a can.

two of our breweries are canning, too - Good People (Birmingham) and Straight To Ale (Huntsville). Both breweries make great beer.
