Oh, please put me on ignore. Probably the best thing you could do because all you ever do is argue, not to mention doing so with a lack of respect for the person you are arguing with. I personally cannot see how anyone who has chosen to serve our flag could have any less of opinion of our flag as I do. My understanding comes from the 20 years my father gave in service to this country. FWIW.

    1. The wearing of the IR flag is totally up to local commander policy as far as I can see. If you have irritation with wearing it in the field, that is an issue to take up with your chain of command, not here.

    2. "but not the laws we don't believe in"? What laws are those? Laws are laws and violation of those laws come with consequences. If a person chooses to disregard the law, they better be willing to pay the penalty for the violation of said law. I personally lobby to change laws I don't believe in, but until they are changed, abide by the law.

Well the IR Flag, can be done without the flag. That would be my argument for the flag being useless on the Army uniform. The reason why im fixated on this, is because I did have a Marine laugh that we had to put flags on our uniforms as we not only had the ACUs to identify us, but also the US Army name tape and the flag.

By laws, I meant ordinances and other things we feel like the city is making stupid laws on. Sorry didn't mean to personally say you, maybe you're not the one who disregards laws that you don't like, but there are those who are out there who don't follow the ones they don't like but then expect others to strictly adhere to the ones they deem important.

Ah for crying out loud! You let a marine get the better of you? Use your wits man instead of getting wrapped up around cannon fodder trying to be witty! All you had to do is say "Ok, I will explain this to you once in terms you can understand so don't blink because you'll miss something. IR patches help identify at night where the next friendly force is to the left and right of me so we don't frag ourselves with friendly fire. It shows the army cares more about its personnel than the marines because they don't want to spend $1.29 to keep you alive." it would have been over at that point.

I once dressed down a Marine Corporal at a USO in the Dallas/Ft Worth Airport. By the time I got done with him, he was at the position of attention saying "Yes Master Sergeant, No Master Sergeant" for all to see, and he was my younger brother. He told Mom on me when we got home. Another time at the O'Hare Airport, I walked into the restroom and washed my hands because I had been out in the sweltering heat for so long. As I sidled up to a urinal this young marine who just got done relieving himself said "In Marine Boot they taught us to wash our hands after we urinated." I looked at this young kid and said "If you had gone to basic in the Army, Navy or Air Force, they would have taught you not to whiz on your hands."

Don't get me wrong, I respect our globe and anchor brothers, but their enlistment standards for a long time did not exceed past a requirement for a pulse.

That Marine that got the best of you is still glowing in his achievement.

As for the people who decide they are above the law, don't worry about them either. Take inventory on yourself and your deeds and don't be swayed by those who don't have integrity and respect. At the end of the day you don't have to look at them in the mirror and judge their deeds, you have to look in the mirror at yourself and judge YOUR deeds.

With that, I'm done on this topic.

Quick question, didnt read what you wrote above.

The flag is NOT a decoration. It embodies all the things you mentioned. However, the flag acts as a decoration on the Army ACUs because it serves no purpose. Would you be inclined to agree with that?

Okay... we're fading fast. Thanks for everyone's input. Neither the flag nor earned ribbons are decorations to be frivolously worn. Those who do not display them properly will not likely be prosecuted (sadly) but is it really so bad if they were corrected in a humble and gracious way? Us vets... we owe it to those who have served... those who are serving and especially those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to correct the violation when we see it. We owe it to the widows to protect the integrity of the flag they were given in honor of their fallen spouse. We owe it to the mothers and fathers whose sons and daughters died for something bigger than themselves. We owe it to men like Patrick Henry who said " I know not what course other men may choose, but as for me, give me liberty or give me death." We owe it to men like Nathan Hale who said "I only regret that I have but one life to give for my Country." We owe it to men like Carl Brooks Henson... my grandfather, who fought valiantly in the Battle of the Bulge. We owe it to the men of the Tuskegee Airman, who fought to win a war of genocide abroad and racism at home. These men earned for us the right to wave the flag... on behalf of a grateful nation... I say Thank You... On behalf of those who are too full of their own piss and vinegar to get it... or to even know there is even anything to get... I thank our heroes still and pray that we are never left to be defended by those who couldn't care less about the emblem of freedom that represents all they can not understand.

Could see why wearing the actual flag would be disrespectful but not flags that are printed on shirts, etc.

It's an image, not an actual flag. In terms of showing your patriotism, it's easier than carrying a flag pole around, which is what it sounds like you want people to do.

No... this whole thread is for those who may not know that there is a right and wrong way to display the flag. Those who just don't care... nothing is likely to change their mind.

I think I read in the flag code I linked that it is allowed for civilians if that is what they wish to do.

I see your point... That's why I raised the question. For those who are displaying the flag wrongly out of ignorance... maybe this thread will generate a greater awareness. For those who know better but don't care or want to just argue for argument sake... Not much else to say about that... I guess.

No... but they are supposed to be lighted if displayed in such a way and made of weather proof material. Honestly... I don't know all these answers. I am just trying to learn to do better in the areas where I am ignorant.

Come July 4th I will be wearing a shirt with the flag designed on it to show my patriotism.

If someone thinks I am being dishonorable because of that, so be it. Obviously it isn't my intention to offend anyone by wearing a shirt with our flag printed on it.

The Minnesota Vikings just tweeted this picture of Blair Walsh (our kicker) in support of Team USA in the World Cup. Is this the sort of thing that is considered dishonorable to some?
