While I agree that we can't have it both ways, I do find it insulting that the cuts come from people who have dedicated their careers to the very government that is using them as pawns in a political pissing match. We can still write out all those entitlement checks, but those people that get up in the morning and go to work, nope you only get 80% of your pay. Makes sense to me.
I appreciate it VS, we're use the Finding Nemo motto: "Just Keep Swimming". They were kind enough to e-mail everyone at my work a Furlough Calculator where you enter you data and it tells you how much your take home will be short once the furlough is in place With my wife and I's numbers calculated our families take home will be cut around $1400.00 per month from May to mid Sept(22 weeks). That's pretty brutal and it could hit a lot of families that way if nothing changes in DC but at the same time I count my blessings because there will be many folks out of jobs all together. I'm hoping to work at nights bartending again for a while. Don't really want to but it's good money and it's cash, will help get us through.
It does suck. But I have found a way to see a bright side. We have a late antlerless only bow season this year that lasts until March 30th. I haven't been yet but I'm thinking 40 more pounds of venison burger could save me some scratch at the grocery store. Bright side = I'm going hunting this week
I just wish every dime that went out to someone not working for it was reevaluated. Food Stamp programs are no longer allowed as debit cards to be used on Diet Mountain Dew and Jack Links jerky at gas stations. Unemployment was for weeks, not months and paid less than the average job. If you need longer, you can perform community service to earn your check. Foreign aid to countries that openly mock and hate us is 100% cut off. If China invaded the US right now, I have a hard time believing Europe would step in and help, meanwhile we send money, troops, and help EVERYWHERE. I know its a crazy dream to even have, but I would love for the government to make its citizens work for the money it gives them, so that those who work and have it taken from them don't feel so ready to switch sides of the ship that is already about to capsize.
I argued your last point here for the last year about it happing to teachers, nobody cared pretty much. My wife has had her benefits cut by 20%, her pay cut 10%. I believe the line was, it happens in the private sector. Hey federal workers, welcome to the party, it's great
I happy to say the lights are still on in America ! Lets see what brilliant moves our leaders can come up with today, maybe shut down the FDA? This has to hurt you know.
I would never argue that teachers get a pretty bum deal, aside from almost 3 months of vacation every year. I do believe they are well underpaid for the job that they do. I went to college and have a teaching degree. When I graduated, and started looking for a job teaching, I quickly realized that I couldn't afford to quite my job in retail because I was making over $10,000 more in that job than I would have been making as a first year teacher.
Another DOD employee here. I don't like having my salary messed with any more than anyone else but I also understand I am part of a huge government that is definitely way too big and out of control. Some common sense "righting of the ship" has to take place and it has finally begun. I honestly do however resent being labeled as the problem by people like Romney because the work I do is important. That being said, all this didn't happen over night and it isn't going to be resolved over night. We need a methodical down sizing over time, not a cut in employee salaries while at the same time doubling aid to Syria or cutting pay to feds to pay for Obama care or to start another war in some place where we should be minding our own business. I know America is in trouble, I'll take my lumps to help save her because I think she is worth saving. That is part of the deal of being funded by you all... Thank you, my life is good. Let's all remember though that most of the sequestration talk is not about the money... its about power wielding and political wrangling. We are going to be fine, but like most good things that happen in life, a little pain is to be expected along the way. May God bless America and bless all of you as well.
You should have came to PA, where else can you accumulate your 10 sick days per year over your 30 year career and then be payed your full salary for the next two years while you take those accumulated sick days. And then have your health care payed for the rest of your life. Yea its a tough ride, but hey some one has to day it.
And their it is, the man could not do the job, but he loves to rip others from high above and he looks down on everyone else, lol
I respect you having to work two jobs. Last year I worked about 15-20 extra hours per month to make ends meet. I am going to have to do it again here soon, like here in the next two weeks. Oh well. I can only speak for myself, but I am sure lastoneout will agree with it. If you come up this way on your way to our Ohio/wherever trip to leave your vehicle or for us to use your vehicle....from that point on, to and from our location, we have the gas money. That should save you about $100 for the trip or more. Consider it already taken care of bud.
My wife and I received our first payraises in 5-6 years this year. With all the taxes increased, we are not really seeing anything more in our paychecks. However, I feel good about contributing a bigger portion into my state retirement system, whereas before I wasn't paying that much. That is only fair to the taxpayers of Virginia. When it is all said and done, I live in a good house, have a great family, and we are happy. If I can't afford to buy all kinds of things for myself, so be it.
You don't hear me whining about my none tax payer funded job, or about all the unemployment benefits I am forced to pay all the while being unable to collect on a penny of them when my work is outsourced to China. Try a nice sharp cheese with that "woe is me" wine.
Alright, to go back to my example. If a teacher earned ten personal days per year, and those day were allowed to accumulate(which is unheard of in the private sector use them or loose them is how that works - and yes thats stupid plan also but no one in the private sector is sickly enough to need another ten days per year off, you would be fired) would it not seem sensible to compensate said teacher at the rate of pay they were making when they earned those days instead of the highest rate of pay said teacher was being paid in their career? Leave your feelings out of it this time.
