After fighting lung disease caused by asbestos that scared his lungs the last 4 years, my number one hunting partner has passed. I lost my 81 year old Grandfather on Sunday. He passed with our entire family at his side. I am thankful(not sad) for the 38 years I had with him. I got to spend Friday all day and night with him. At 2:30 AM he woke up and we got to talk. He still had his mind and I got to thank him for being such a great grandfather to me and a great "great" grandfather to my kids. Every member of his family is better off today because of his hard work, my kids will go to college because of him. Not just my kids, but he made sure all the Great Grandkids can go to college. We shared many hours in the field hunting, we shared many more hours talking about hunting. This year and opening day will be tough, I always called him with an update on how the hunt went. I always called him when I connected on a hunt. Below is the last buck he held in his hands, I took this buck to him just so he could hold it. I felt in my heart last year I may never get another chance. I told him early Saturday morning he has always been my hero in life, he smiled and ask me to lay him back down. His pain meds kicked in a few minutes later, he looked at me and said "George Bush is an ass, shut the damn TV off", I laugh, he always could make me laugh.
sorry for your loss, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I lost my grandfather this past february, he too helped me get into the outdoors and I will always remember the memories we shared together.
Sorry to hear that Gary. Since being a member on HNI and this site I know how much he meant to you. I'm sure you meant just as much to him. Prayers sent for you and your family.
You have my thoughts and prayers Gary. Glad you had the opportunity to make many great memories with your grandfather.
Germ, I am sorry to hear of your grandfathers passing. May your hunting season be blessed with the spirit of your grandfather.
Tough one Germ. Nice way to go, being with the family, my wonderful grandmother went the same way. God bless.
Sorry to hear of your loss Gary. Though he may be gone, you have some wonderful memories of a wonderful man that will always be with you.
Wow. What a wonderful post. Though I teared up reading it, I'm happy for you and your family for having such an awesome man as a grandfather.
Sounds like a great man indeed. I'm glad you enjoyed so many years with him. Not all of us will be blessed with 81 years. Thanks for sharing a few words about your grandfather. Best wishes to you and yours. C
