This past year we really analyzed our property and tried to figure out what else we could do to make it more attracting to deer. This wasn't because they weren't already there, but our focus was about improving the health of the herd. We concluded that we needed a watering hole. I went to Tractor Supply and bought a small water/feed bin and burried it just off a pathway to give it a test. If it continues to attract deer like this we plan on putting in a small used coy pond that we got for free. I think we have our answer.
That's exactly what I'm banking on. That first dude has pop cans growing from his head. I need to see what they look like once they grow to see if he's one of the twin bucks we kept seeing from last year. He'll be a 3.5 year old come deer season and he will be on my hitlist. I know people say to wait until they are 4.5 but small acre hunting doesn't allow for waiting unless you have people around you letting them grow too. Either way, this guy just got the nickname "Pop Can".
Are you just letting the water hole fill naturally? It shouldn't be too hard this year, with all the rain we have been getting.
Good growth on that guy. A couple of years ago when we had the drought, I took a small kiddie pool out and placed it in a high traffic area. It attracted a lot of different animals. Blessings.........Pastorjim
I filled it with a gallon jug and rain has kept it full ever since. I imagine I will have to add some on my own once summer hits and the rain slows down.
Works great, dig in a few 110 gallon tanks from tractor supply and watch the deer come, great deer. Scoot
At least 400-500 yards, and even then it's a shallow creek at best. I got a lot of good pictures of bucks and does both at this watering hole within a 10 day period. It's basically right at a spot where 2 different trails meet. Anyone looking to do this, I highly recommend it. It was a $20 deal and 15 minutes with a shovel. If you can find a kiddie pool or used coy pond for cheap/free all the better. Of course you don't have to burry it, but I did because I wanted it to look as natural as possible. I will make the rim look more natural with mud and rocks but for now it's definitely serving its purpose.
I got another picture of "Pop cans" and he appears to be growing nicely. I got a new camera too, I was fed up with the 8 year old quality and short battery life of this one so it will be retired. Also, here's a picture of one of the honey hole whitetail salad bars that appears to be coming in great. The other one is a bit bigger but I forgot to snap a picture. Is it bow season yet??
