Lots of stuff went wrong this morning, hole frozen up being the worst. We shot ducks but nothing like we should have had it not been 3/4 froze. My son did shoot his first swan!! I'll try to get some pics of the highlights of the trip for you guys when I get home.
My poor puppy is wore out at the end of every day. Not as many birds as in years past,we're having to burn lots of fuel to find huntable numbers.
Hoping to see pictures, soon! Our duck season opens Saturday. A group is going out - but if weather is going to be nice I'm heading into the woods. My husband has been checking out an area swamp. Seen some coming through, so he should be bringing some home.
Our season opens back up again Saturday. Hard saying when I'll actually be able to go out though due to harvest in full force now.
Got my first duck! Had a small group of four come in - didn't have much getting any other - but it was fun! Our season opened up on Saturday, but I went out this morning due to the lovely rain ruining other plans. We didn't take the pup - he's way too little. But, when we brought it back let him sniff it - he was getting the hand of "fetching" it. Hopefully we can get him retrieving next season!
Congrats on your first duck! Now you're ruined That's how you get them dogs birdy, hopefully you'll have a good retriever when he gets bigger. I'm still in ND but we're leaving in the morning. I'll get y'all some pics when I get home. Its been a great trip!
You need to clip a wing off it and tape it to your training dummy so he can get used to the feathers.
Congrats on the blue wing teal. I shot my first blue wing this weekend aswell. Been waterfowl hunting 23 years and only shot green wings. Wacked a pair this weekend only with 1 wood duck and mallard. Forgot to take pictures...
grnhd, hope North Dakota has been good to you. We had tons of luck on our side during the early season. We are heading back out in a couple days to the north central area of the state. We are hoping to find a couple good snow goose shoots. I know this warm front going on up there right now is not going to help but strong winds and lows near or below freezing come Friday will hopefully pull some decent numbers down. I know there are pockets of 30-40 thousand sitting just north into Canada so they should pile into Nodak quickly when the weather turns. Here are a couple of the better mornings we had out there during the early season.
We did that with geese wings. Anytime he was let out yesterday/last night he was out in the yard chasing loose feathers! He grasped the concept of carrying it. He carried it proudly! It did take him a minute to realize it wasn't going to kill him. He barked like crazy at it. But eventually, a quick sniff and he was golden!
Yeah the limit for the early season is 15 per person per day, with a 3 day possession limit. It was our first time doing the early season out there and I highly recommend it!
Wish I were further north in MN to make trips like that more feasible! Damn SD and their fall applications...
I have never done it but I hear that your chances of getting drawn are really good for South Dakota. Also you can apply as a party. So you either all get drawn, or none of you get drawn. I am pretty sure thats how it works. I think the deadline is usually around mid July as well. I would look into it because its amazing how well those big birds decoy during the August-September season.
first time teal hunt this year. Loved it! season was three weeks in Texas. 6 a day. Only got 7 total . Can not figure out how to load pictures. Sorry not tech savvy.
We have a pretty good early season her for geese. We usually do very well. 5 birds a day is enough for me. If I ever go on a goose hunt of out state again it will be to Missouri in march for the snows. I loved it and would love to go back.
Even for the early season? In Nodak the early season does not count toward your 14 days of hunting during the fall federal season. If Sodak counts the early season toward your fall season that would be pretty lame. Pretty strict as well considering the number of birds and hunt able areas throughout the state.
