Hey folks, getting ready for first bow hunt and wondered if I should wash all gear before use? I was going to put on the cover up scent on day of hunt before I start walking from truck into the woods so not sure if washing was needed??

Also, how do you folks store gear in season when at home? I've read people use plastic bags, but if your using a cover up spray do you still need to or should I say, would it be advisable to still store gear in a plastic bag? Bit confused on which way is best. Thanks!

I wash and dry stuff with dead down wind, then I dust it in carbon and store all of my gear in a hs scent safe bag. When I pull it out I'll spray down with the ddw field spray and spray from knees down in acorn scent. Seems to work good being that I haven't got winded for the last two years even with terrible winds. If you do everything right I don't think it matters what direction the wind blows because this has worked for me. Some guys say it doesn't matter what you use they can still smell you but maybe they weren't as carefull as I was because I've had deer within 10 yards down wind and never noticed me.

Plano and a few other manufacturers make air tight plastic tubs or boxes. There are also scent proof plastic bags made by people like scent lol and hunters specialties. I try to wash and dry my clothes as little as possible but as needed. If I work up a good sweat or just get sweaty a few times I will re wash and some times even just Re dry my carbon clothes. Don't know how effective the reactivation of carbon is but that's what they advise. I always get dressed in the field so my clothes don't pick up anything. Cover scents are ok but I like to just try to be scent free by wearing scent lol base layers and really concentrating on as least perspiration as possible. I try to let my other gear hang outside. I'm not saying I'm right that's just my routine. Honestly this scent control topic is getting so huge one could probably write a book on it

Where do you get your carbon dust? How messy is that stuff? Doesn't it get everywhere?

I got some stuff from sota but I had to crush it and grind it to make a powder and yes it was messy. You could find some stuff on amazon that's already in powder form that is cheap or you could get some carbon synergy that has silver added in it. What I'll do is put one or two pieces of clothing depending on size in my scent safe bag, dump a bit of carbon in and shake it really good. Just a warning but if you do it to your face mask you will have a black or gray face.

I would say yes wash before. Better safe than sorry.

I keep my clothes in a bin and keep it in the garage. The garage is non-insulated and we don't park vehicles so it pretty much smells like the outdoors.

Turn them inside out and wash with a scent free wash in cold water. You don't know those cloths came from. I store mine in big zip loc bags, them store them in a large plastic tote. Keeps everything organized and neat.

Just went out and bought those scent away totes for storing gear.. 22 bucks a bag.. did I just waste my money and do garbage bags do the same job? Says to put into bag after wash with those earth wafers? was thinking of lightly spraying with DDW after wash than placing into bags..

After you wash them just throw them in the bag right away. If they go in wet or damp it will not be good. A few years ago I put my pants in a bag after I was walking through the snow and let's say I forgot about them and they smelled terrible and had some mold starting to grow on them. I'm not sure if it would be that bad if you just spray them with ddw but if you do I would let them dry before putting them in a bag.

You can buy carbon from a pet store in the fish section, I just bought a tub of carbon for the filter in the koi tank.

You place the filters in between the layers within bag?

The carbon is a granular you purchase it loose in a container. The filter I have the carbon can be replaced the filter vessel has a sealing lid.

you just toss the pellets into your gear bag I assume without putting them into filters? probably doesn't make a difference either way as long as its in the bag.. I assume.

I threw some in my bag before. Unless you change outside I wouldn't put them in without a filter.
