There's gonna be a warm front coming up here within this coming up week before season a of gun opener here in south east minnesota, and I'm planning to hunt all of that week before the gun opener. How would you guys suggest I strategize to hunt that week with the warm front? Plus, do you guys think deers will still be moving much since they are starting to rut, and do you guys think it'll be worth it for all day sits? I'll be hunting in white water state park located in plainview, mn. Thanks and hope to hear what you guys have.
I hunt in Red Wing and have also been dreading the forecast. I plan on doing all day sits, but am most focused on sunrise/sunsets to be productive. However, Thursday the winds shift and a cold front is moving in, so we will have two days before the orange army invades. Good luck!
warm weather doesn't mean **** during the rut. if a doe is in estrous you will see bucks pushing in any kind of weather.
I've seen bucks chasin' doe in warm weather grunting excessively, with their tongue hanging out panting like an old hound dog. I was also sitting by the only drop of water in the woods - and they ALL stopped nearby to drink before picking up the chase. Here's a thought: if there's no water near where you hunt, dig a hole and put in a child's small plastic swimming pool even with the terrain to catch rain water. You might just find you've created a 'honey hole' on hot rutting days.
Mornings will still be plenty cool. Weather absolutely DOES matter during the rut. If the temps get too warm more of the action will occur at night rather than daytime. Some of the best hunting you will ever see is when it changes from warm to cold.
I will sit in the rain next week if it happens, I have an east wind stand just for approaching fronts.
I'm in the same boat Sota. I have a stand just for an eastish wind. It looks like it may be in the rain Saturday morning but I'll be there.
Weather plays a role, but I wholeheartedly disagree that it shuts it down as mentioned above. Does WILL come into estrous at any time of the day or night. When the main portion of the breeding takes place it will happen regardless of weather. A doe is certainly not going to wait until night time to come into estrous because it's cooler. Every time we have a warm patch like this, I still keep going back to two different mature shooters. One I totally missed and the second because I was half asleep in the tree and never had a chance. Both deer mid day, both on sunny high 60 degree days. It's the rut. Anything can happen. No one killed a giant from bed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you are referring to my post I most certainly did not say that weather shuts down the rut. Day time buck activity is lower during very warm temps...this is fact. The warm front we are speaking of (in MN) will occur Oct 30-Nov 2 which barely even takes us to the chase phase of the rut much less the primary breeding phase. FYI, I will hunting everyday for the next two weeks regardless of the weather.
Just my luck. I have off this Sunday thru Wednesday, the whole warm front. Time to repack. Out with the wool. In with the thermocell.
Thanks guys, with your responses I think I'll be picking my all day sits on thursday and friday then.
Again, thanks for the response guys, but I just wanted yall to know that regardless of this warm front that we are having, I'd still managed to harvest this nice 9 pointer at 15 yards.
I was a little disheartened when I saw the forecast as I have the 4th, 5th, and 6th off to hunt. Highs in the 70`s the first two days then a 20 degree swing to 50 on Friday.
My FB feed and text messages are lighting up with dead bucks these past few days in spite of the hot temps. Seems like the first couple hours of the morning when temps are still cool they're moving good, and again the last hour or so once the sun hits the horizon. IMO you'll still have some good hunts. Just gotta get out there and get after them!
After years of having guys tell me to sit all day I finally decided I was going to try it from Nov 1 until our rifle season on days I don't have to work. Well I've seen shooters every day, but only from 10 to 3! Just today at noon I had a nice 9 at 1205 come by at 35 yds but wouldn't close the gap. So no I don't think the weather effects them much, when the does are coming into heat the bucks will be moving. I just have a terrible feeling that I lost a lot of opportunities at shooters in the last 18 ruts lol
Cool thanks Justin. I will be out regardless. Just good to know others have been seeing some on their feet.
