What's the scoop now, my old camera was a Canon G20 that I purchased refurbished and it served me pretty well. I sold the setup in the spring to finish getting me setup with string building. Now it's time to get another setup.

What's the best option out there with 20x zoom?

The new 4K Sony's seems like that's be the ticket for cropping those zoomed out, self filmed kill shots but I'm not familiar with Sony at all. Especially when it comes to accessories (mic, lanc, etc)

I'm wanting another setup but maybe not as extravagant as last time. What's going to be my best option that has 20x zoom and LANC compatible.

If your budget is $500 to $1000 then you are not going to make huge jumps from your old G20. You could pick up an XA20 or G30, both are nearly the same in form factor as your old G20, but will move you to a 20X zoom and give you more recording format options. Sony has some good options as well. To get to a 20X zoom in your price range you would have to go with the AX53. It would also get you 40X with their Clear Image Zoom feature. Pretty simple camera that gives you 4K as well. Open your budget more and you can get into the AX100 and then you are talking about a real powerhouse of a camera in a small and simple form factor.

Video camera technology and new model development seems to have stalled out for the past couple of years. Canon, Sony, Nikon, and others are putting their resources into DSLR and Mirrorless systems. Right now that is where the exciting developments are exploding. But a move to that type of system requires more than your budget suggests and introduces a new set of complexities that may or may not be appealing to you.

4K seems great but is a editing nightmare and I don't think I have the ability to do that very easily. I'm not really looking for an extreme upgrade. I just really want a good camera with 20x zoom.

I like the g30/40. They're slightly better low light and have the zoom capabilities I want.

I like the looks of the Sony's but I'm most familiar with Canon's. On the sony's do you have the ability to just use 1080 rather than 4K?

The G40 is the perfect camera for me it seems but refurbished they're around the 800-900 range. I'd also be ok with the G30

Yes, any 4K camera will have the ability to record in 1080. One of the advantages to most of the 4K camcorders is the sensor size used. Not necessarily on the AX53, but when you get to the AX100, it has a 1" sensor. This helps in low light and also with depth of field. Buying a camera the records in 4K is kinda like future proofing your purchase. People were still buying standard definition cameras a little as 7 or 8 years ago. Same thing "Could" happen w. 1080. Not saying it will, but eventually it will, just don't know how soon.
