What are those little wafers that i see pinned onto the caps of the bowhunters on The Outdoor channel? Are they scent canisters? Are they mosquito repellants?

Are they useful and where do you get them?

They are scent wafers. They come in a few different scents, with earth scent being the most popular. I think they also come in estrous and pine. Some guys like to put them in containers with their clothes and yes the hunters on TV like to pin them to their caps.

Personally I'd rather smell like nothing.;)

Like the other guys said they are scent waffers. It is a debatable issue as to weather or not they are effect. Personally I don't use them. I'd rather use a scent killer spray like Scent-a-way or something like that.

They are scent wafers. I always use to throw them in my bin with my clothes but found it cheaper to just buy the Earth Scented dryer sheets and stick in the bin over the season as they are cheaper! They make many diffeent brands/styles/scents of the wafers!

I pin one onto my pack each year, and also keep one in my bow case as well. Other than those two items that I'm handling a lot and aren't stored in scent-proof containers I try to go scent free.

The wafer pinned onto the hat is more for marketing than anything. And since someone asked about them, it's clearly working! :D

Pinning one of those things to a hat is one of the silliest things I have seen on them hunting shows...and that is saying a lot.

Ive been using them for years I love them. Scent wafers is what they are called. I use the fresh earth ones. They are rechargable as long as you keep puttthem back in their canister they came in. I generally leave mine in my air tight tub with my clothes. Not much need for scent killer then other than on the boots. My wife hates it when I open my tub in the house, she says it smells like dirt lol....i always say better than smelling like people lol...

My favorite is strawberries and cream. If I get hungry, I just pop one in my mouth. It's like an all day sucker. Similar to the people that buy them! :D

I know what you mean, my uncle who is a great hunter and i agree with almost everything he does, except one. He smokes in stand and gives me the play the wind thing which is true, but you will never be able to cover the smoke scent, and he doesnt like scent killer or scent cover up products.

So here's a thought. The head gives off 30% body heat, which is the largest amount of heat given off on any part of the body. With that, does your head give off the most scent since heat rises, so would your body odor be given off in a greater amount? If so, then wouldn't the wafers possibly reduce or mask those odors? Just asking.
I use them along w/a lot of other products. don't know if it helps, or hurts, but one thing I know that it has been a very long time since I was busted by a deer for scent.

Personally, I really can't answer your question because I've never used any wafers or anything for that matter. However, I too rarely get busted by a deer from scent .Alwaysplaying the wind and keeping clean clothes has worked well for me. I used to wash my stuff with baking soda but haven't done so in over 12 years. I wash my gear in plain water and air dry. I only wear my clothes for hunting, nothing else.

    Back to the wafers........................

How often do you think the deer in your woods get a wiff of that wafer you're wearing? My way of thinking has it that a deer is going to notice that foreign smell. I don't believe that a wafer can duplicate the exact oders of my hunting areas therefore making the wafer a "foreign oder". So now the deer notices the oder......... he "thinks"............... makes a decision, ignore, investigate or flee. I've noticed that older bucks prefer the later.

I want to smell like nothing, nothing at all. I don't believe that they make anything like that. I believe that nothing at all is better than something that is not 100%. Anything less could make matters worse. Who knows? The wafer, in time, could possibly come to mean "human" to the deer after repeated exposures.

Besides, my head is not a problem for me, my feet are. Your foot path to and from your stand is vastly more important than your air born head oder.

Nice hat! My dad used to do that. He also used to pin a plastic, twist-to-open scent container that was saturated with skunk scent to the cuff of his pants!!!:mad::eek:

It is quite possible that he ruined me for life as for pinning any kind of scent on me. Especially when he forgot to take it off while driving home in a hot car after a hunt! :(:(
