Very alert/spooky deer almost makes it impossible to draw! Awesome hunt and my arm was about to fall off waiting for her to give me a broadside shot! Patience paid off! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKM5TA4j8MU
Looks like she could smell that a human put that corn there, but she was still wanted the corn enough to put herself in a dangerous situation. That was one SPOOKY doe, that's for sure, especially for being no older than she looks. Shot was back a little, how far did she go???
She ran about 40 yards, she dropped where the tree limbs of the tree I was in blocked her going down. The drawing of the arrow stopped her, had to rush the shot because I could not move the camera... after holding my bow motionless for 8 minutes, I thought my arm was going to fall off! lol
Thanks for waiting for the broadside shot. You could tell she was starting to relax. Congrats on a very successful deer hunt and an awesome season so far.
Thanks! Yeah, hopefully some young/beginner bowhunters will see this and know that patience pays off, taking a bad angle shot that you are not confident with just ruins a hunt... and shows no respect for the animal. You should always respect the animal you are hunting and make a quick humane kill.
This is a very over populated area in this video... 1,634 deer carcasses were removed from this county last year (deer/auto accidents), NJ went from 450' from a dwelling to 150' for bowhunters... this allowed me to get in on this property legally and do some doe management. I have taken 9 does out of here and I am yet to see a buck! The first 3 deer were easy, they are on to me now and the hunting is getting harder. A woman and 2 children were killed just blocks from where I am hunting years back, a deer came through her window, knocked her unconscious and she hit a tree, thank God her daughter lived.
Ditto! Takes alot of patience to not take that hard quarting too shot. Being able to wait for that broadside shot resulted in a clean & ethical harvest, Good job man!
Great video! It's a goal of mine to get some footage like that this year as well as a first-time self-videographer (or videographer, period... for that matter ) Good job.
Thanks man, get yourself the "camera tree arm", it is a camera mount/arm that attaches to the tree with straps. Here is my favorite shot so far (the 1st deer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePLew98CggI
I did quite a bit of research on camera arms earlier in the year and ended up going with the Muddy Outfitter arm coupled with a Manfrotto 701HDV fluid head... http://gomuddy.com/shopping/Departments/CAMERA-ARM-SYSTEMS.aspx I wanted something a little higher-end because I want to film not only myself but my father and boys later on as well. Keep the good footage coming!
Sam, After seeing the second video, I'm wondering, are you "de-scented" when you put the corn piles down??? Seems like the deer are very LEARY of the corn piles. Something else you may try that I've heard works great, is taking a cheap jar of peanut butter, and cutting the end off, screw the cap to a tree using a drywall screw and a fender washer, and then screw the jar back onto the lid, leaving peanut butter available for them to lick to draw them in a bit. I haven't used it, but recommended it to a buddy trying to get his kids a chance at a deer, and both were able to score in two days during the Ohio youth season..... Just a couple thoughts. I get nervous shooting at deer that are that alert as I've "gutted" one and punched one in the head (killed her dead as anything, but definitely not the ideal shot) when they jumped string. Good videography by the way, I re-read that and I sound really negative, but I'm just brainstorming aloud. But the videos are good quality work, and CONGRATS on having 9 tags filled already, I'd love to have an opportunity, but I'll be waiting until NEXT week before I can even get to the woods.....
Congrats on your success. I don't think I've seen a more nervous deer than that doe! Between the noise from the road, dogs barking, and the jets going by over head, I can understand that deer's nervousness! Where I hunt, I have those jets going by all the time as well. It really jars my preserves!!!!
