I have always wanted to bowhunt a velvet whitetail so I am in need some info. Since I am in Iowa I dont have that chance here. I am looking for any info on states where season is open early, over the counter tags and some good public land opportunities.
I want it to be a DIY hunt , not with an outfitter.

I also would throw around going with someone who is close to my area that may want a hunt like this.

Come October and November I want to be here but an early season hunt before then has always been a goal.
    Any info would be great.
    Thanks
    Mark

KY is one option for early whitetails but if you expand your horizons into mule deer and/or blacktails your opportunities multiply substantially.

South Carolina's early season opens normally about the 15th of August along the coastal lowlands. There are also areas there that they hunt deer with dogs due to the extremely thick swamps. It's different!

I was going to say the same thing. Unless you are dead set on a whitetail in velvet you may want to consider blacktail or mulies.

Thanks guys. Kentucky was one at the top of my list. Not a bad drive and recently may have found some private land to hunt.

Mulies and blacktails are on my "to do" list for sure but I love whitetail hunting so much I figured a velvet chance would be a good, more afforable hunt to start with.

When does Ky archery season open?

    Thanks again.

North Dakota would be a great place to get a chance at a velvet buck. If It weren't for me bear hunting every fall I'd be there Instead.

KY is a Great option. The Heat can be rough in early season. There are several western states that would also give you a chance at a Velvet Buck :)
