While I probably could grow them... it would be a hassle. We are on the border between zone 2 and 3 so more then likely our winters would kill it so I would have to plant them every year. Blueberries need an acidic soil to do well. We don't have acidic soil so I would have to deal with that. Blueberries need a lot of water. We normally don't get a lot of rain in the summer so I would have to water. Blueberries do much better on rain water then the rural water that I would be using. Everything I have read says their root system is pretty finicky with the chemicals they use for treating water for our use. Blueberries needs light soil that water drains through fairly easy. Under our top soil is clay. It doesn't drain very well at all. I would have to put in a raised garden like Preacher Tony is doing. I would have to Peat moss it. I would have to pine needle it to bring the PH up. It is just too much hassle and more of a headache then it's worth from what I am seeing. I checked into it 20 years ago when I bought the place and nothing really has changed that I am reading now on blueberries. Tim
Dan That is a nifty two row planter. I can't even imagine planting with something so small. I started out with a 12 row and now plant with a 24 row ( 60' ). I plant between 3,500 - 4,500 acres a year so this is not a dig at you in anyway and please don't take it as such. John Deere has 48 row planters now and I would imagine the few guys running those think my 24 row is pretty small. A 48 row wouldn't work in our chopped up mess of pot holes. Most guys won't go past a 16 row in our area. How many acres of produce are you planting ?? I would like to know more about your operation as I find it pretty interesting. Never been involved in the produce side of farming and would love to know more about it. Tim
I am drooling! So cool Dan.... i would love to see the prigressin pics as they grow.... Sent from my LGL86C using Tapatalk 2
No worries Tim, I didn't take it as a dig. I was going to get a 4 row MaterMacc, but it had a 10' wide tool bar and would make it more difficult getting between home and the cabin. This was I can leave it attached to the 3pt and drive it right on the trailer. My total pumpkin, squash and other misc test veggies this year total about 23-25 acres. The vast majority is pumpkins and squash. Like 95%. I will also use this planter for the corn and soybean plots at the cabin, which totals about 15 acres. Take a little extra time doing it with the 2 row, but its not like its a big area. If the business grows more and we plant more at the cabin I'll probably end up getting a 4 row MaterMacc.
I only have a 3' fence around mine...I hope that is enough as we don't have nearly the amount of deer you have at your place
Same Here, even tho I'm in SE Wisconsin, I plant all my stuff no sooner than Memorial day, it gets too cold at times like a few years ago where I lost everything 1 week before memorial day. Mine is just starting to poke thru the ground as we speak.
