It would great if everyone understood history and something as innocent as a gun registry that was instituted with good intentions led to one of, if not the worst tragedy in the history humanity. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/365103/how-nazis-used-gun-control-stephen-p-halbrook I for one, have no interesting in providing our government more power than they already have. The idea of freedom has nothing to do with whether or not I NEED anything, it has to do with the fact the we have limited our government from taking away our rights. It's pandora's box, once it's opened, do you honestly think the left will stop. They will continue to chip away at our rights until ultimately we no longer have the rights that are guaranteed to us. Any you know what, mass shootings and mass killing will continue and mostly get worse.
This guy was no dummy. He did his homework. He was a well educated, intelligent mind. To think that if there were laws in place that prevented him from possessing firearms of any type that he wouldn’t have hurt anyone is naive. The human brain is complex. We are problem solvers. If we are determined to do something we will find a way. Some of you may scoff at what I’m going to say but the absence of God in ones heart is the root cause of actions like this. Plain and simple. Whatever your religious beliefs are. If you don’t believe in God then substitute Love for God. Same difference. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I didn't ignore it. I simply don't care that much about the round. I care that we are allowed to have weapons that by design, can accurately deliver large quantities of rounds. Of the weapons you mentioned, very few can deliver rounds in the hundreds like AR style weaponry. Again, it is the design of the firearm. Many different rounds can be fired from semi-autos, that has nothing to do with the fact that some weapons (by design) were developed for killing in numbers. Those, we don't need. I've made my point, you don't have to agree. I doubt if you would care if you were to die from a .308 vs a .223. Dead is dead. But, the weapons that deliver those rounds come in different designs. Some, more deadly than others.
I'm not allowed to drive a top fuel dragster down the interstate. I am allowed to drive my truck. A truck that I have to register. Giving up my right to drive a sprint car around the town square certainly did not lead to me losing my right to drive. We are limited by law in many things that did not cause the sky to fall.
What you drive has no bearing on your ability to protect your self or your country if ever needed. I know it's easy to sit hear and say that there's no chance we will ever be overthrown or that a tyrant will somehow take over in this country. I'm sure the Germans felt the same way in the 30's. Do you honestly think this tragedy would have been avoided if he hadn't had access to AR platform type weapons?
What's your "solution" then Germ? There is nothing anything could have been done to prevent this. If it's not a shooting spree then it's someone plowing a truck into a crowd. You can't legislate the riddance of evil, period. Murder is already illegal, what more do you think any law, government, or process could do to prevent this? None, end of story. Laws and processes only define the punishment/penalty or reaction, they do nothing for prevention.
Just because you aren't allowed to drive a top fuel dragster down the highway doesn't prevent you from doing it though. You could build one or buy one, legally or illegal, unregistered, and drive it down the interstate. I'm amazed at the lack of understanding of this concept. Laws DON'T prevent, they simply provide the penalty. Murder is already illegal LOL. Think people...think!
There is only one guaranteed way to have prevented the Vegas Shooting. Killing the shooter before he had the chance. We know for fact, that there is no shortage of ways to kill many people. How many of those killed in Boston were shot? How many killed in Manchester were shot?
The problem with this topic is it's typically all or nothing. Prevent all mass shootings from happening, or not. It's not an all or nothing game. It's like the drug argument. Drug laws don't prevent all drug use, but they likely deter it. It's safe to say more people would use drugs if they were legal. I mean, isn't that what all the anti weed people say? If it were legal we will have a bunch of stoners running around? If we don't think tougher gun laws would reduce gun violence, then why have drunk driving laws? It's the person that kills people right? While I don't doubt a lot on this forum would prefer looser drunk driving laws, the existing laws likely deter people from drinking and driving. So it's about reducing the likelihood. I would never support a gun ban, but I do think something better exist than we have now. And chicken little doesn't want to talk about gun control because they think that will mean gun ban. I also don't believe we need more gun toting citizens. It doesn't reduce crime in this country, statistics show it leads to more gun violence. Instead, we have an administration that is reducing mental health care while the NRA has their nuts in a wallet.
I have a pretty simple criteria when it comes to creating laws, especially when they are laws that restrict rights we have. What is the purpose of the law & Does the law accomplish that purpose. As long as I can agree on the purpose a law is created for, and the law accomplishes that purpose. I can support the law. I have a real problem making laws that don't do what they were intended for.
I know people will think I'm sitting here with a tin foil hat, but how many of us truly believe things like this are perpetrated by one guy that just snapped. A guy that has given no indicators that he was on the edge of snapping. A successful guy, a wealthy guy, a guy with no criminal history? How is that guy the guy that does something like this? Surely we will learn more about the shooter in the coming weeks, but from what I have seen so far, he's just another guy with no real political or religious leanings, no criminal record, no indicators of violence. That guy plans, prepares and carries out this? I'm finding it all hard to believe there's not something much more complex then we will probably ever know.
Agree 100%, which is why the conversation needs to be realistic. Stop all mass shootings, or nothing can be done. All or nothing will never work here. Reduce gun violence is a realistic goal. The US averages about 1 mass shooting per day. I think it's realistic to believe that can be reduced. An honest look at gun laws, and better mental health care. Unfortunately, we are moving in the opposite direction.
You're dealing in what if's, I simple don't know, 1 because I don't know all the facts about the shooter. So sorry I can't play what if's game. Because it can be played both ways, I try and deal with what I know. I still think a good place to start is with mental health, and if you are on any mood altering drugs, you don't get a gun, if your doctor states you are not fit, because you say crazy stuff. I am sure will get 20+ reasons why it won't work, and that's fine, will never eliminate violent acts, ever, but if we can reduce them with making access a little harder, work with mental health. Get some of these football players off their knees and in our cities helping kids with education and showing them there is another way beside gangs, we have a chance to make the world better.
The design of semi-automatic weapons was for one reason only. To inflict the most damage possible in the shortest amount of time. That's funny? "Nothing but a semi-automatic weapon". Hmmm....... A lot of innocent lives have been lost to that style of weapon in the last decade. Maybe we should focus on that.
