Ok we are discussing the vacation for the summer, it will be me, my wife, 2 kids 4 and 1. Our usual spot is Myrtle Beach, SC and did the Virginia Beach area last year. But I thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone has suggestions...also somewhere in driving distances,(NC) im not flying with my two knot heads. :D

I wish I could help you MB but we have not been on a vacation in over 10 years. The last time we did go somewhere it was to Destin Florida, the area is nice and the beaches were great.

a cabin in the smokey mountains somewhere between Gailanberg and Pidgeon Forge, they'll see bears walking the mountains, deer roaming around, got Dolly World, horseback riding. Most cabin areas also have a pool.

The greatest place in the world!! JERSEY SHORE  NOT... you can always head down to Florida. Key west if thats not to far or take them out to a cabin with beautiful scenery. I live in PA so a good vacation would be going to North or South Carolina.

I was going to suggest the above places. Why not look at some places you've haven't considered near home. Or how about you and your wife take some time flight somewhere to reconnect and home some adult fun then take the kids on a short weekend excursion.

    A win win situation.

Thats practically my back yard, grew up and still do take that as a weekend vacation from time to time...just a little ride over the mountain. The scenery and all is pretty much the same as here. Thanks though...do you go there often IV?

I was going to say Ely, MN :deer:

... but then I saw the part about the kids. I've made the drive from MN to Myrtle Beach, probably not he best idea with a 4 & 1 yo.

I attended a course at McGee/Tyson Air Base in Knoxville back in 2002. My father died on the first day of the course and a classmate died on the 5th day. God and the Smokey Mountains were the only things that kept me going through that 5 week course. Before anyone thinks what I know they'll think, my father knew he was dying and knew that this course was instrumental in my career. He instructed his doctor to tell me he still had several months to live and made me promise that I'd finish the course no matter what. I kept my word.
Anyway, I want to go back so bad to revisit the scenery that made life bearable and get better photos of the area. Also, with kids that age, the best way to travel is keep them busy all day and then start your trip about 10 PM. They'll fall asleep in the car in no time and you can have peace and quiet all the way to where ever you choose.

Ever been to Hilton Head, SC??? If you like to ride bikes (I carted my two around in a trailer behind my bike each of the last 3 years (my 4 and brother's 5 yr old this last time as my older one could ride by herself this time around fairly well, enjoy the beach, enjoy a night just chillin' listening to music, etc, Hilton Head is probably our favorite vacation spot. I easily ride over 100 miles a week, just peddling around, checking things out. Golf is pretty good down there, though I don't golf, I know my uncles and a lot of the people love the golfing there as well. Not too touristy like Myrtle. There are also some short neat little day trips you can take to check out some of the local stuff just north and south of HH.

Edisto Island State Park SC if you prefer quiet and peaceful.

We go to the Smokies several times per year and I never get tired of it but we usually stay in Townsend: aka "The Peaceful Side of the Smokies. 30 minutes to Gburg, PF or Cades Cove.

Savannah, GA is pretty and not a terrible drive.

Not sure where we will vacation this year. With 2 two year olds it gets pretty interesting. :)

To the OP, how about Lake Gaston...right there on the NC/VA line..awesome place...went 3 yrs ago with my Father In Law and his Wife and we are going again this season..my children had a blast..(and I did as well) he (father In Law) took his boat and we were on the water everyday....little island to play on and pull the boat up to...fished our butts off.....it was awesome, if you haven't tried or been before you should give it a shot...beautiful place

Also, I have heard from numerous people Smith Mountain Lake in Va is really nice as well...never been but we are planning on going sometime....
