This would be the one issue with HH. It has recently been a 1deer only wma. Others are within driving distance if that became an issue.

Most wma in the western part are great from my experience. The north central part may be a better option for those traveling but im not familiar with those wma's.

North central has some good WMA's but they tend to be smaller than the WMA's in the western end of the state. Veterans WMA would be a good option for travel because it sits on I-75 and is within about 10 minutes of I-64. It's also within 10 minutes of jimmy johns and 5 minutes of Waffle House.. The issue with this place would be the gun hunt dates and the fact that this past season, the first season it was a WMA, 146+ deer were taken on just over 2000 acres. There are still a lot of deer, but that gives you an idea of the pressure it received. I suspect this season won't be as bad, but there were some big deer killed there, and some big deer were seen that weren't killed, so it will likely still be a crowded spot next season.

That pressure isn't bad, we killed 54 on 600 private land acres this year. Now that's pressure.:D

Im not sure how quota hunts affect pressure. I know at HH there is no quota hunt. There is only a youth firearm season early in the year and they get a little more traffic that weekend.

There is no hunting allowed in the state park here so I'm not much help on that one either.

Your more than welcome to ride with me Tfox.

Yes it is. I have a ton of info on it, thats my home court. What do you want to know?

If this is the case, HH would be a much better place...Its about 1/3 the size of Pennyrile and has double the deer numbers. Penny has around 10-12 DPSM...HH has 40+ DPSM.

Id love to meet up with you guys but I dont have the time to travel that far. Maybe if we could get something going in Illinois or Indiana during the fall i could come for the weekend to hunt and hang out. Or if its possible for a hog hunt during the summer i could do that for sure. Its just difficult with school going on so i have to work around that.

plus beer and dip........Tell you a funny story about Gri22ly. I hunted with him for a couple of days in NC a few years ago....we are on a quick walk in one morning in the pitch black and Josh stops, points to the ground and says, "that is wild ginseng". He goes on to pick up a clover sized plant and says, "yep, thats wild ginseng" and just continues to walk. I was in amazement.

For those of you guys researching and discussing places to hunt, I really appreciate it. I have been extremely busy with work and will be so until Friday, therefore it has been hard for me to really read or think about our get together. Lets try to solidify the plans by the end of February if that works for everyone.

Sounds like a plan. I don't really care which place is picked as long as it has deer and isn't in the western most part of the state.

I hunt WMAs in central and eastern Ky. I don't know much about the state west of Louisville.

KY river WMA is bow only. No gun hunt in early November. It's a little out of the way, and the locals are uber protective of it, but there are good deer numbers from what I've heard..

Here is a thread about the HH - hunted a few different public land locations in Kentucky (I'm from Indiana) in 12-13 hunting season. The HH is by far the best public land spot that I hunted last season.

One note: the 15" antler spread expires this coming season - that restriction is no longer in place from what I understand. The lake is really nice and has plenty of places for fishing off the bank. I saw a lot of deer at the HH in the 2 days that I hunted it - no bucks, but saw plenty of evidence that would suggest that plenty of bucks in the area.
