I have been going to Ohio for the last 4 year. It is $125 for the license, $24 for an either sex and $15 for the antlerless. Use the antlerless for a doe and keep the either sex for the one buck you can kill. I think their is some stipulation about having to buy an either sex tag before you can buy antlerless, but not sure on that, have always bought one of each.

It is about 6 hours from my place in VA. After I get done hunting in OH it is about a 3 hour trip to my house in PA.

If I am looking at a topo map and I see an area has been strip mined, what should I expect to see on the ground? Young growth or are the topo maps not current as to the actual conditions?

No problem, Matt! Just trying to make sure I understood. You guys that are going, are you planning on buying an antlerless tag? My thoughts are that I can kill a doe anytime in my home state and I'd strictly be buck hunting in OH, if I were to go.

Here is a small spot I just looked at Brett and a few other photos of the same spot through bings birds eye view. There are 100's of spots like this all over these two places.

ok Josh much better concept now. I will begin using the birds eye view to help my scouting. I want to take my time and focus in on some good spots.

I'm going to toss my hat in the ring. I think I should be able to make it no problem. My only concern is this going to be a group effort or each man go at it alone? I suck at topo map hunting.

As far as I am concerned its a team effort lets go out and put some deer to sleep. I'd be just as happy seeing one of you guys behind a mature buck! If I end up being able to go its more to enjoy the outdoors and the bowhunting experience with like minded individuals.

We really need to establish a base camp.

Seems Woodbury has a small primitive camp area open year round on a first come, first serve basis.

NC, it is 100% a team effort. We are all eyeballing the hunting lands and also conversing with those that may have knowledge of the properties.

That is why I am trying to get an e-mail distribution list set up so we can toss ideas and maps around via e-mail instead of putting them on here.

I am glad you are in! That means we will have guys from Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and now NC attending!

Kind of worried about that because someone else will probably have that thing taken by the time our entire group gets there. Are there any other campgrounds within 20 minutes or so?

I know it's late in game to be changing things up, but on national forest land I'm pretty sure you can camp just about anywhere so long as your not blocking any roads, fire trails, trails, etc. if this was the case I've heard good things about Wayne National Forest. It's so pretty big woods though.

It not too late in the game. We have two months. I like big woods and don't mind walking miles in each day to hunt...as long as one of you all hold my hand in the dark. :)

I'm starting to go map nerd here. Organizing each small section of Woodbury with a numbering section. It is going to take me a couple of weeks to do it all then I will move on to Conesville. I will save them to my photobucket account and allow the guys that are going to hunt complete access. Not saying I am a savy map hunter, just staying it may help all of us with our orientation to the lands and collective thought process as to where to hunt given the conditions.

Brett I am gonna look into both ... Would like to hear other Ohioans opinions on Woodbury/AEP vs Wayne NF hunting. I think it would be cool to hit the big woods and camp were ever I please of that is indeed true.

Primitive Camping is allowed on NF land away from developed campgrounds and anywhere that your camping equipment and/or vehicle do not block developed trails or road right-of-ways.
Plan to bring enough drinking water for the duration of your stay. Leave a clean campsite by packing out all refuse. There is no charge for primitive camping, although a 14 day limitation is in effect. It is not normally necessary to check in with the Forest Service. However, groups larger than 25 people require a permit and prior coordination is required.
