I was given Fred Bear compound bow in 2005 and shot targets pretty often with it when it was new. It has been in storage and not used since 2008. I wasn't able to make much time to get into hunting due to the military but now that I am getting out I would like to. My concern is can I just get by with doing some tune-up and maintanance on this bow I already have or would it be more beneficial to invest in a newer model.

Get a new string, and go for it. You can upgrade anytime.
