Can anyone tell me how they use the Doe Estrus Scent? What they use it with and where they put it out? Thanks for your input....
I use it on a drag line behind my boots as I walk to my stand during the Rut. Also, once the Rut kicks in, I place some on a wick 15-20 yards in front of my stand.
I have used it a few times and had success with it once (well success in that the buck I wanted ran in nose in the air but I missed) . As a general rule though , I do not use it . For it to work you would have to have the deer down wind of you and I try to avoid that .
I have had some really good luck with doe estrous taking numerous bucks in the past few years, my buddy and I both swear by it. The trick, to my success is use it sparingly. Lots of guys i feel like hear the stuff works and go out and dump a boat load of it out each time they go and wonder why deer arent rushing to the scent. There are way more ways for doe estrous to be used to your advantage than just pulling a buck in on a string. First things first, fresh estrous is key. Buying a new bottle every year wont break the bank and may pay for your tag in the end. I normally ask for a bottle from the back so i know it was shipped this season. And if you feel like really splurging on urine you can order it direct and fresh from deer farms online. Ive never done it myself but that would be the best urine you could bring into the woods with you By using it sparingly I mean a few things, only use it when conditions are perfect and dont use it too much. When i say conditions are perfect I mean when its that cold november morning and you just know bucks are on their feet and you have that 6th sense that its going to happen. Thats when i pull it out. In a scientific sense perfect conditions are all in the humidity. Deer smell best at about 50-70% humidity because A: their nasal passages remain moist and can pick up scent molecules better, and B: air in that range of humidity is the perfect density to keep scent low to the earth without washing it out in a rain. Dry cold days a deer cant smell that well because his nasal passages become dry. thats why if you notice in many hunting videos if you call to a buck, or he smells a doe or is scent checking a doe he will lick his nose, wetting the nasal passage allowing him to pick up a better scent. Thats why i try to use it on moist days, one to get his mind off of my scent which he too can smell better, and to allow for bucks farther off to catch the smell, maybe drawing them closer. Also, Evenings seem to be when the bucks are most receptive IMO, that of course besides mid day. In the evening as the air cools the thermal winds actually bring the air down to the earth. This keeps your scent down where they can smell it better and track it in. Not only that but many times a buck is locked down with a doe in the mornings headed back to the bedding. In the evenings he is out on the search for a doe that is also on the move and will be actively scent checking, greatening your odds one will come in. You dont have to use a lot.. A deer has roughly 300 million scent receptors, we have 5 million roughly. also they have been said to be able to smell in 2 parts per TRILLION. therefore if you can smell it, its like smacking a buck in the face with it. Dowsing a wick in scent is simply overdoing it, when it comes to estrous in my experience less is more as long as its detectable. I posted this theory my buddy and I have been trying on the forum the other day and it seems to make great sense to us. we dont apply our estrous or doe pee scent to the ground or any objects. when hunting a mature buck, most movement is nocturnal. So as your scent that you applied to the ground lingers, he may come in for a look when you arent there, once he realizes hes fooled he will not be fooled later. Unless of course you switch urine scents or move your set. We stopped using drag rags and using strictly wicks, which we carry out in plastic ziplocks when we leave. I have seen more buck activity since we started doing this but who knows its just our theory. I often times use it too if the wind is starting to swirl. A small wick of doe estrous up in your stand may just be enough to keep the buck down wind of you at ease to come by. I saw Justin on the bowhunt or die show use this either last year or the year prior as a buck was coming in, sprayed some estrous on his tree to block his scent. I believe he ended up harvesting that buck too. Last year I had a buck come completely down wind of me licking his nose and grunting. My only estrous was the wick in my tree which he obviously smelled and came in for a closer look. Shot him at 11 yards, my first pope and biggest buck to date. Another way Ive used it is to create a "rut hot spot". By putting estrous in scrapes (without contaminating them with human odor of course) it will make a buck believe a doe is in heat close by and may have him hang around searching and scent checking for her. All of this is just my opinion and ways ive had it work. good luck out there
I get fresh urine from Stonycreek whitetails, I use it for drags, I typically drag it towards a mock scrape that I have established near my stand. It doesnt work all the time, I think too many hunters think its the magic fix, just like a lot of other things... but when used carefully I have seen it be a great tool. Its an awesome experience to see a buck cross that drag and come in hot. For me it seems to have worked best mid day... a little goes a long way.
I will start using a little doe in heat this weekend as I have seen bucks already start to chase some does around a bit. I like to spray it on branches and tap the branch tips on some trees and the ground during the last 100- 200 yards to my stand. Over the years, I have seen buck come in on a rope and also totally ignore it. I'm not in the camp that you can overdue it. I have smelled many areas where doe have moved through and there is a super strong sweet sent that lingers in the area. Our smells and theirs is likely different but, too strong to us might not be for them. No facts here. Just opinion and experiences. Unlike rattles and grunts, I'm not hung up on scents and their applications. I just like having it in the back half of the season. Rattles and grunts are another story...I have a system I love and trust.
I have had a lot of success with estrous. If you combine it with a doe in heat (primos can) call it is a deadly combo. The can call brings them in from a distance and the estrus draws them in for the shot. One time I was about 10 yards from the base of my ladder stand putting a wick out on a trail. as I fetch the wick out of my container I look up and hang the wick on the branch, I put the container back in my pouch and look up. 10 feet from me is a young 4 pt buck staring at me sniffing the air.... The only thing I'm thinking at this point is "this is the day I get raped." He stood there eye to eye with me for 30 sec and then took a step closer. I unsnapped my buck knife on my hip and looked to the ladder stand. I thought I could make it there before the buck attempted sodomy on me. Finally he turned and started to walk back off where I assume he came from. I walk over the the ladder stand and start to climb. To my amazement he started to come back! I didn't want to shoot the little guy so I just continued to climb. I got 15 feet up and hoisted my bow to my hands all while this buck was standing at my scent wick 10 yards away. after a minute or so I think he caught my wind and spooked good. Took off running away. I just sat back, chuckled and thought "I really dodged a bullet." From that day forward I vowed to never apply estrous to my person. That's asking to get raped by a deer. Good Luck!
I killed a nice 8 point last year using Jackie's Deer Lures, the Triple Discharge stuff. I sprayed my drag line with it, walked to my stand, and then walked around my stand getting the sent on little saplings and stuff. He came right in and followed the drag line exactly, the whole time he was licking and curling his nose up. He was going nuts running around smell it. I got him to stop at 20 yards and blasted him. Using the same stuff this year! It works, IMO.
I can't hijack this thread. In short, just some constant grunting very 20 minutes. Mixing in rattling when I need to be a bit louder. Very short grunts with 6-10 grunts about 1-2 seconds apart. Works when bucks are looking for does.
