Back in march i posted a "rant" thread for my 13 year old son, about a 55 year old man going back on his handshake deal for a muscle car. Here's the link: http://forums.bowhunting.com/water-cooler/60392-rant-my-kid-thread.html Here's what it said: ""ok I am absolutely red lining right now....my 13 year old son is obsessed OBSESSED with classic cars and muscle cars. he and my father in law have been going to car shows, car cruises, friends with cars houses for years, since he could walk because he's into cars too. my son has been doing odd jobs around the house for money and saving all his Christmas/birthday money for the past 3 years, hasn't bought himself anything. he has a thousand dollars saved up and we told him if he saves a thousand, we would chip in the rest for a classic/muscle car fixer up project. a few weeks back my father in law came in contact of a junkyard/salvage yard owner and brought my grandson in there to meet him, the guy loved my son right off the bat, because the kid knows cars...like rainman...he doesn't miss a beat! so of course my son was drawn to a 71 dodge super bee. original engine transmission, a little rot here and there, but a perfect fixer up for the kid and my father in law. the guy said well this one was mine, I don't need to sell it, I don't need money, its not about the money. he looked at my son and said, ya know what? I think this is the perfect car for your son, I know he will respect it, finish it, and cherish it, so it's yours for $2200.....my father in law shook hands with the guy and my son on the deal, my kid has been on cloud nine for the past week. yesterday was the day of getting the car and paying the guy. my FIL went to the junkyard and the guy wasn't there, so he called him. the guy said, ya sorry I changed my mind.....WTF?!!!!!! are you kidding me? this was for a friggen KID...you looked my FIL and MY SON in the eye and shook hands on the deal..i guess my FIL lost it on the guy saying the same thing, its for a kid, who will respect it, cherish it and always take care of it. the guy said, any other car you want you can, I got chargers challengers...im sorry. what a kick in the sack, I almost wanted to cry when my FIL told my son yesterday, my heart was breaking for the kid. BUT he took it like a champ, opened up the laptop and started looking for cars for sale. to go back on a deal with another man...it sucks, shady, but it happens....... YOU DON'T BACK OUT ON A DEAL WITH A 13yr OLD KID!!!!"" Well to update where we are today!! My son was reading an issue of Hot Rod magazine (i think?)about a guy who had dozens of old muscle cars in a barn when the roof collapsed from to much snow, and now he was selling them all. (fixxer-uppers) We were able to contact the guy and found out he is in NY, only 3 hours away. My wife explained everything about my son, and what had happened and the guy invited us down in early June. Sensory overload!!! He had super birds, super B's, chargers, cuda's you name it he had it!! Of course alot were out of our price range, but he worked with us, and gave us a great deal on a 71' Barracuda. with the original 318 engine, and transmission. He also gave us a almost free 69' 426 wedge engine to go with it!! We shook on the deal, and said it was ours, and he would hold it for us while we scraped up the rest of the money. Saturday August 9th, we rented a trailer and drove out to NY and got the car!!! My son is constantly out at the car, hood up, writing things down trying to put everything in order on where to get started!!! pics to follow!!
That's a sweet car...the first old bastage did you guys a favor. Just hope you're both prepared to spend some serious money to get her in ship shape but what a great find!
That is absolutely awesome bro! That's what it's all about, right there. Great looking car. CoveyMaster is right the first old guy did you a favor. Screw him anyway, I mean what kind of person does that to a kid. ESPECIALLY to shake on it then back out. What an @$$hat!
Ya my son is well aware of it being a 4-5 year project. his goal is to have it done by the time he graduates, so he can roll outta high school in style! He/We already have his first job lined up for this winter. he will be working at a transmission shop on saturdays, and maybe one night a week as well. He's motivated that's for sure! Thanks Remy, it's crazy how people are.
Congrats to your kid. I'm glad you were able to find an honest guy...not too many these days really. Its going to be a lot of money but also a lot of memories putting that thing back together.
That's great. He'll have a ball. Great to see a young guy interested in something more productive than video games. It's gonna cost you a few coins too though.
That's awesome ! Some of my fondest childhood memories are of me and dad building my first pickup, a 74 Dodge power wagon. You all are going to have a blast
Awesome Joe!! He definitely looked stoked! You'll have to keep us updated on the progress of the car.
Hey SS, another thing that your son would benefit from would be to hook up with a body shop!! Learn the in's and out's of metal work, mudding the car (bondo) and the process of paint. I went to Wyotech which I learned alot but once I got into the shop, thats were you learn all the little tricks that make the job much easier!! He'll prolly start out sweeping floors but if hes got the motivation, he be banging on some metal real soon!!
Thats pretty awesome. I hope everything works out and if he keeps that drive then the project will turn out to be pretty darn awesome.
