Theres been a lot of talk lately about ditching satellite or cable tv and now Matt posted a video about how Facebook is changing and you can't really see the content you want to see. Lately I've even thought about ditching the smartphone, but don't know if I could. Yet, I know I waste a lot of time on it. I don't know if I could fully unplug, as I use the Internet to do a lot of research. But, I think I could live without much tv and the smartphone. Could you fully unplug?
Not yet, but when I get the last kid off to college, I am unplugging. I live my life and work connected to the grid. I run 4 websites, CRM, sharepoint and 9 web apps I wrote. So when my day comes, I am unplugging. Already ditch cable, best move I ever made for my family.
Yeah, we're also ditching cable/satellite when we move to the farm in a couple months and I know we won't really miss it.
I had no internet, smartphone, or cable in my apartment for a year before I got married. I was trying to save as much money as possible during that year. I read a lot of books that year. And worked out like a beast. It wasn't that hard mostly because I have internet at work. I could probably do it now, but I don't think the wife could as she actually has to work at work
We cut way back on the sat package, and i don't miss it. At our farm there is no cell service pretty much...but I'll admit I miss it, eventhough its nice to out it down and actually do something. Not sure about completely unplugging.
Smart phone and internet no way. I enjoy and spend 10x more time on the internet (both laptop and smart phone) TV sure I could get rid of. As long as I can check scores of football games on my smartphone. I am one of these people that literally have their life in their phone. I work from my phone, I play games from my phone, I communicate from my phone. Did I mention I really like my phone? I'm that guy.
I'm cutting the cable soon but I'm afraid my smartphone is here to stay.......lol it's just too handy Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
There's been times when I cut myself off for a afternoon just to get away from work but there is no way I could do it permanently. It's too integrated into my work wife. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We haven't had cable/satellite tv for a couple of year now. Don't miss it at all. I have to have internet for my job. Even if I didn't need it, I would still have it. Our smart phone bill is expensive, but I have my set up as a wifi hotspot so I can work while traveling or from a mountain top. I don't use a smart phone nearly like most people do... and I don't feel all weird if I leave it at home... but I don't want to get rid of it either. I try to carry it when I'm out by myself so if I fall off a mountain, it will help people find my carcass.
I should add that we did finally plug in our 14" tv. (don't ya'll be jealous now) and have the roku hooked up. I've found a tv show called Arrow and I've watched several episodes. It has to be the most 'eye candy for women' show I've seen yet. LOL. :D
It's funny you should mention this. As a technology education instructor, I do have an interest in technology (I suppose that goes without saying). However, as I read all of the news regarding new gadgetry coming out (my Feedly is full of it), I often find myself asking myself, "why is this necessary?" Or, "how long will this fad stick around?" There are certain things I still use on a regular basis that are technology based that I love, but the inundation of new technology seems rather pointless. So many apps, so many new phones, tablets, wearable technology, smart TVs, etc. I live a relatively low technology lifestyle (again talking modern electronic technology) outside of work, and I'm falling more and more that direction as I get older. I will never become completely unplugged, but don't expect to see me in line for the latest gadgets, or building a Google/Nest home:D
I havent had a home computer in about a year. But I sit on one all day at work. I havent ditched cable yet, but and going to cut my package way down as I really dont watch a ton of TV
I would love to completely unplug, but there's noway I could. The internet is too valuable, saying I would miss it would be an understatement. I'm constantly on the macbook or smartphone just scrolling through news, pictures, drama, sports - downloading music/movies. But having said that, I could easily say goodbye to satelite tv and just read books. Id actually prefer to do that, so maybe I will.
There is no way I'm ditching my smart phone as I use if for too many things (music, gps, decent camera, email, web browsing, etc). I would still need a phone so I wouldn't even save much $ if I got rid of it?
TV...Cable ect we could do with out. Truthfully for the amount we use it its a poor value. But for the little it costs and the fact that it is tied to our internet and phone I don't see a reason to drop it. Dropping internet and smartphones are something that wouldn't even be a consideration, as it represents way too much value for our use with both work and social/entertainment.
I am too. I do everything from my phone. We are donating our extra laptop to our youth group for a raffle prize and my wife suggested getting a tablet. But between work and my phone. I'm covered. We suspended DirecTV and are going to cancel it Monday. Everything that we normally watch is on antenna or Netflix. I just bit torrent the Sons now that Dexter is finished. I've thought about it a lot. I suspect that when my son gets older we may seriously consider it. I spent my childhood outdoors and I hope we can get to a spot where it will be easy to kick him outside to do whatever it is kids to outside and he won't be distracted by the TV and/or video games. I can say one thing for sure, we won't have video games in our house. My parent's didn't allow them and while I hated it at the time I'm thankful for it now. I couldn't stand watching my kid turn into a couch sloth with eyes glazed over playing video games all day. I'll let them have a computer but not a gaming specific console.
Honestly, no. I can't get through college and the season without any of them. Always on the phone looking stuff up on the road for class and always on the computer for class. TV is a must during rain delays.
Absolutely could not. Use internet and phone WAY too much for work. And I am greatly addicted to sporting events on TV.
