I'd want to give him every advantage in life. But, down the road when he's an adult I would also like for him when he puts his head on his pillow at the end of the night or looks himself in the mirror in the morning to say "i've earned and worked for everything I have." I wouldnt' want anything handed to him. I would like him to outwork the other guy rather than beating the system to gain an advantage. Not in anyway, shape or form making reference to anyone here cause I dont' know your situations (or frankly don't care). Just my outlook on it. It's the way I was raised and God knows its' how I lived my life. I've worked my tail off to be where I am. Which isn't all that great, but not too bad either. One thing I'll always be able to say is I did EVERYTHING on my own and worked for it. And will until the day I die.

Also, to be honest I shake my head a little bit at some of jobs outside the self employed private sector. When I listen to personal days, sick days, vacation days, mandatory % raises, retirement plans, unions, etc..... it's like a totally different world to me. I have absolutely no correlation to any of that kind of thing in my life. I'd take a sick day if I was dead. Personal day???? Someone has to explain that to me someday. Vacation? Vacation is my ride home after a 14 hour day lol. My pay raise is based on how good I run my business and the profit and loss statement at the end of the year. My retirement is how I invest the money I manage to save. Etc... Just two opposite worlds.

Probably coming across as being an angry post, but it's not. I don't lose any sleep over it. Matter of fact I'm friends (good friends) with a lot of people in "the other world". Good for them. If they're happy so am I. I'm just saying it's a different world than I'm accustomed to. They better than me.... me better than them? Nope. Just not my cup of tea.

This just does not make a lot of sense.

A guy works hard and is talented enough to EARN a college scholarship, athletically, OR academically and it's a bad thing?

    lol

Good lord, the point is he got a hand up, scholarships are GREAT! Hopefully those that receive them are smart enough to realize it's a hand up for some that otherwise could not continue their education. LMAO.

Sliver. My wife went to college, took out student loans because she could not afford to pay, then paid back every last dime. She took out student loans through her entire time in college, then paid them back in 10 years just like one is expected.

If someone has the grades to attend college and does not have the money, they take out student loans, right?. After they complete college they pay back the loans. How can anyone use money as a reason not to be able to go to college...if they are serious? The average college student spends about 3-5 hours a day in class. Any college student that is willing to get a part time job can easily afford an apartment/food. I can understand that some kids have to stay home to support their families, but everyone else that is able to attend college and is serious about attending college, has the means to do so via student loans.

I did it every summer..worked 20-30 hours a week, went to class, studied, worked out 2-3 hours a day...that paid for my classes, apartment, and food.

I owe like $30,000 in school loans. I would have given my left nut for a full scholarship.

All men are measured on their own merit, your nothing special.

No, they are not. Not even by a long shot. If that were the case then why does the lazy good for nothing union employee make the same rate as the hard working union employee with the same seniority?

You keep bringing up you have 20 years as a finish carpenter and cabinet maker like it's some kind of big deal.

It is a big deal, and that does not count my time in the service nor does it count the time I worked before that.

I have 38 years in the work force, 43 if you count from the time I started working at the Archery range at the age of 12 to pay for my equipment.
Went to work in a production welding plant at the age of 17. You can take 6 away for the Marine Core but we will count my time in the Army as an Engineer. I have 4 years of drafting and enough diplomas to fill a large loose-leaf binder evean though I finnished High school in Japan while in the Core. And I'm nothing special. Makes me wounder why people like you think you work harder and are so much smarter.

First, with all of you diplomas you would think you could do a better job at grammar and spelling. Second, I do work harder than most, and I would say that I am smarter than many too. I did not work to the level that I did and not have those capabilities.

If I was a betting man I would say your back in school because your non-union job closed shop and left you without a pension like so many of them do.

Good thing you ain't a betting man. I left that job of my own will. I did it to ensure a better life for myself and my family. I did it because I know the value of an education. Statements like this are equal to the conceived entitlement of welfare.

Got a Lady friend that works in the Insurance Industry that has made it to almost 20 years now for 2 different companys. Both time her job has been phased out. If she had a union that would have never happend.

Problem here is that you still don't get that she might still have a job but at what cost to society, at what cost to the companies customers, which are the same workin folks that you say get their jobs protected. If she were the smartest or hard working person in the office they would not let her go so easily.

I think if you look your major up in the Urban dictionary it will say something like "Learning to Kiss Corporate Ass both Foreign and Domestic" Just Saying ;)

The above statement proves your self realized inadequacy as an employee and as a person. You bash anyone that has a degree or a formal education. Did you fail miserably in school? Again, do you tell this garbage to your children? Would you look your son in the face and tell him that he should not go to school because those that do are nothing but kiss-asses? The fact is that someone has to be in charge, and it will obviously never be you.

    Their parents/siblings? Or, their own?

    One is a choice.
