We have cable internet for 59.99 month, you get basic cable with that, not by choice. For 7.99 month I have Hulu Plus. It's great, we watch what we want when we want. Cable can suck it Work pays for my internet So I pay 7.99 a month for TV
It's also ridiculous what is counted as a channel nowadays in the 250 channel package. Out of those 250, I watch 10
Right, but of course, you HAVE to buy those 250 channels to get the 10 you want to watch. I have dish, have like 250 channels, and pay around 70 a month. HD in both rooms with The Hopper. I think after a year, it will go up to 90ish. Not terribly bad considering what I was paying with Charter cable. I tried the whole Hulu Plus thing, but half of the channels worked only on computer, and half worked on my PS3. Also, I couldn't find a lot of the TV shows I wanted to watch on there. I thought it was terrible to be honest. I also have Netflix, which is AMAZING for kids. The only reason I really have Dish is because my wife wanted it. I really don't watch TV, and when I do, its generally sports that are on local channels.
And the 10 channels that are good only come in the packages that are 250 channels or more. The one good thing I like is that I can buy all the outdoor channels a la carte for $5 a month -which is a bargain if you ask me.
Brad, what about sports? I am seriously considering picking your brain alot more in the near future. The wife and I do not mind paying 100-110 a month for the cavble/net/phone...but every so often it jumps to 150-160 and more for no other reason than I have been a loyal paying customer for 6 months or a year. I call, threaten to leave and they readjust the price because of some specila rate that just started today. I hate cable, and wtch all the Bama and Falcon games as well as 100 ish Braves games a year with my FIL. Thanks for any info you got.
A lot of it depends. I'll start with the Falcons because that is the easy one. I put up an aerial antenna to recieve the over the air signal. All Falcon games should be broadcast on FOX. No problem there. There are two things I love about my antenna. 1. The HD is the purest possible. Better than cable or Dish. That is because it is true full signal where as dish and cable has to compress their broadcast before sending it to you. The second is all the sub-channels you get. Each main broadcast channel has many sub-channels on that you can only get over the air. Example would be if the main channel is 4 (4.1) you will get 4.2, 4.3 etc. Bama- If they are on CBS, you once again use your antenna. If it's ESPN I'll explain below about that. If they are on some other network you will have to check and see if it is streamed on-line. Then basically what I do is hook up my laptop to my TV. If it would be on another network and not streamed on-line you would be SOL. You would either need to head to a bar or a friends house. I have no idea where Bama has most of their games and you will have to do a little research. Braves- Tell me what zip code you live in. That will make all the difference. I need to determine if you can get MLB TV (don't confuse with MLB network) and if you are in the blacked out area. ESPN- There are two choices with ESPN. First to simply hook up your computer to your TV and stream ESPN 3. You will get some of the things ESPN has and some you will not. The second choice (and better one) is to get an Xbox and then get Xbox prime. It think its $7/month. Xbox has a deal with ESPN where you can get their channels through XBOX. You would also not need to buy a ROKU box if you have an Xbox as it does everything the ROKU box does. The system is not perfect. It is very good however. IMO, you will see most if not all you want to watch and save yourself a bunch of money. Will there be minor inconveniences? Probably. But I think with Netflix and the few things we get on Amazon Prime it's worth it to save that kind of money. It is not for everyone. If you live and die by your TV than perhaps that cost is worth it to you. To me, it is a no-brainer. Check out Amazon Prime. It's a good thing going. Let me know what your ZIP is and I'll tell you what your brave options are. And let me know if you have more questions.
How funny is this. The day I posted this thread, I actually called Time Warner to cancel. Had them set to come disconnect on 3/1, figured that would give me enough time to shop around and see what others were using. Yesterday an "Account Executive" from Time Warner shows up at my house. Apologized for the price increase, and offers me $99 a month for turbo internet, cable, and phone. 24 months no contract. This will save me $60+ a month. That seems a lot more reasonable to me............guess I'm going to stay with them now.
Glad it worked out for you. My good friend was thinking about dropping paid TV as well and then Uverse made him a deal he could not refuse. Direct offered to lower my bill a little bit but it wasn't worth it for me. Plus I love the feeling of not giving my money to those yahoos.
That is some great information Brad. I have a Nintendo Wii, and that is compatible for Netflix. With that being said, in order to get started, what must I buy to get up and running. Do you still pay for Internet? My wife and I watch a few shows but always on demand.....there is not a show out there that we sit down and watch live, so that is not an issue at all.
Every time I get an increase to my cable or sirius I call and threaten to cancel. Not because I want to, but because at the higher price its just not worth it.
Whatever Direct TV cost these days (my parents cover it except Sept-Jan...when i pay for it). I would surely DIE without NFL Sunday Ticket (Havnt missed a Packers game in 6-7 years)
Just a FYI. Xbox is the only non cable/dish system that has a deal in place with ESPN. If ESPN is a must for you than you will need an Xbox. Personally I just take what they give free on ESPN 3 (I think they call it watchespn.com now). But you need to be able to connect your computer to your TV which is typically done by a HDMI cable. Yes I still pay for internet but the way I look at it I would of paid for internet if I had paid TV or not. Are they shows you watch on Netflix? Amazon Prime may be the way to go if not. We have both and it pretty much covers every show out there. If you only want to pay for one then do you have kids? Netflix is king. Adult stuff Amazon Prime is probably your best bet. Do you order things off Amazon? If so you get free 2 day shipping on everything if you are a prime member as well. You can go on Amazon prime and search for shows to see what they have. They have the choice of buying shows or movies by piece meal or you can get those system with the Prime. What other ?'s do you have? What is your zip code?
I have Dish. Just got my bill yesterday and it went up $6/mo to about $75 with DVR and local channels. Its not too bad, but I still think its overpriced and WAY more than a new subscriber pays. I'm gonna call them and complain. And yes, the 250 package has about 225 channels that suck. Where I live, sat for tv AND internet are my only options. So I have to pay for local phone, cell phone, internet, and tv. It sucks a$$, but I don't have much choice. I run my business from my home so I have to have a local phone and internet, plus cell phone service is spotty out here anyhow. I would love to have cable or fios and be able to lump it all together to save some $.
2+ bucks was for a local sports addition and 3+ bucks was an increase I'm alright with the increase I know the have increased costs just like every other business. They deducted the sports charge
