I was hunting some public ground in South Dakota this week and the land I was on had a food plot of turnips. I kicked around some of the turnips and they were hard as a rock. I don't see how it is even physically possible for a deer to eat these things in our freezing temperatures. Should turnips even be planted in the northern states?

I understand the deer eat the leafy part of the turnips, but don't they ideally eat the turnips themselves, too?

I have planted them a few times here in southern wisconsin and yes they do love to eat the turnips themselves. I have watched them digging them up in January before and gnawing on them. If they can crunch acorns they should be able to handle a frozen turnip.

What about radishes we have those planted where we hunt. Does anybody know if they eat them as well.
