I finally got one to commit to the decoy this weekend. I have called in birds on every hunt but they either hung up just out of my comfortable range or stayed behind too much brush etc. I actually slept in and did not leave the house until 6:05 am and shot him at 8:05. I had several birds working and this one finally made his move. I shot him at about 15 yards and dropped him in his tracks with a 100 gr muzzy 3 blade. This bird had strutted in from about 300 yards away earlier to 45 yards and then left when three more birds started hammering away just to the North of me. When the group of three did not come in, he came on a string right back in to my setup. He weighed 24 lbs. Nice to get one down and also nice to still have a tag in my pocket.
Thanks guys. I wish the weather would straighten up so I could get back out after them. Supposed to stay cold, windy, and wet for several days.
Cool deal. Our season doesn't open for a couple more weeks. Right now it's too darrn cold. Wind has blown for 3 days, rain, a little snow, some more wind... it's just not nice weather. LOL BUT.... in my travels I see gobblers everywhere strutting their stuff. Congrats on a nice bird and a great accomplishment.
Good job Dave! I had some that chili when I got home and then tonight I poured some over leftover mashed potatoes.
I'm heading out in the a.m. to attempt to accomplish the same feat... would love to finally shoot one in the springtime!
Thanks guys and good luck to you all. Sounds like most of us are fighting some really crappy weather this spring. I suppose it bothers the hunters more than the birds. But it sure makes it tough to work birds.
